Quakers Edge Royals in Overtime 113-107

Eastern Mennonite University hit four three-pointers in the final minute of the second half to send the game into overtime, but Guilford College pulled away for the 113-107 victory in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game on Saturday in Harrisonburg, Va.
Guilford (9-5, 4-3 ODAC) led by nine at halftime and held the lead for most of the second half until EMU (8-5, 5-3 ODAC) tied the score at 81-81 with 3:20 remaining in regulation. The Quakers went on a 9-2 run to go up 90-83, but then the Royals began their three-point barrage. Freshman Korey Whiting hit back-to-back three-pointers sandwiched around two free throws by Caleb Kimbrough to pull within three points at 92-89. Sophomore Jason Sager then committed his fifth personal foul for EMU and Kimbrough hit one of two free throws for a four-point lead. After two missed three-pointers and another Guilford free throw, the score was 94-89. This time sophomore guard JoMorrae Gordon pulled up for the three-point basket for EMU. Jordan Snipes hit one of two foul shots for the Quakers, setting up a chance to tie for the Royals. Freshman Jered Lyons connected to tie the score with 11 seconds remaining. A last second shot by Ray Edmond clanged off the rim, sending the game into overtime.
Guilford started the overtime period on an 11-2 run, building a 106-97 advantage with 2:01 remaining. EMU crawled back to within two points on a Corey Bailey basket with 34 seconds remaining to make the score 108-106. But Guilford sealed the victory on the free throw line to record the 113-107 victory.
Five players scored in double-figures for the Quakers, led by junior center Genaro Lawhorn with 24 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Thomas Burge, sophomore Jordan Snipes, and freshman Kerry Atkinson each scored 15 points while freshman Ray Edmond added 14.
Freshman Brad Parkes continued his sensational week for EMU with a game-high 31 points along with eight rebounds and three assists. Parkes is averaging 28.7 points in three games this week. Freshman Korey Whiting had 20 points. Sager narrowly missed a double-double with 15 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and three steals before fouling out. Gordon had 13 points and a game-high seven assists while sophomore Jason Lentz had eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds before also fouling out.
EMU will play again on Sunday when the Royals host Emory & Henry College at 4:30 p.m.
