Freshman guard Korey Whiting scored a season-high 29 points to lead Eastern Mennonite University to an 85-84 victory in double overtime over Randolph-Macon College in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference game on Saturday in Harrisonburg, Va.

Randolph-Macon (3-4, 3-1 ODAC) was the preseason conference favorite in the ODAC and looked like it by jumping out to a 31-13 lead with 6:39 remaining in the first half. However, EMU then went on a 9-0 run to cut it to 31-22 with 3:24 remaining and continued the onslaught to pull within three at 35-32 with 47 seconds remaining. R-MC went into the half with a 38-33 lead.

The teams battled back and forth the entire second period. The Yellow Jackets increased their lead to eight with 16:52 remaining at 43-35, but the Royals continued to keep the contest close, never allowing the lead to go over six for the remainder of the half. EMU finally achieved its first lead of the game at 70-68 on a pair of free throws with 2:46 remaining by sophomore JoMorrae Gordon.

Junior forward Justin Wansley tied it at 70 on a jumper with 1:44 remaining. Each team missed its next three shots, but on Wansley's attempt with the clock winding down, EMU sophomore Jason Lentz grabbed the rebound and was fouled by sophomore guard Adam Krovic with just 0.2 seconds remaining. Lentz had a chance to give EMU the victory with two free throws but missed both attempts, sending the game into overtime.

In the first overtime period, R-MC held a 79-77 lead in the final minute, but Lentz redeemed himself with a tying jump shot with 25 seconds remaining to send the game to double overtime. In the second extra period, the game was tied at 83-83 with 2:35 remaining when sophomore guard Chris Ropp connected on two free throws for the Royals. At the 1:46 mark, Wansley was fouled and hit just one of his two attempts to make the score 85-84. He had one more look with 51 seconds remaining but couldn't connect as the Royals held on for the one-point victory.

Whiting, who entered the game with just 31 points all season, finished with 29 points, nine rebounds, one assist, one block, and five steals. Lentz had 20 points, eight rebounds, and five blocked shots for EMU while sophomore forward Jason Sager had 18 points, eight rebounds, and two assists.

Wansley had a double-double with a career-high 33 points along with 12 rebounds. Senior guard Justin Moyer scored 11 points and had a career-high seven rebounds along with four assists.

EMU shot 42.4% from the field but connected on just 3-of-15 three-point attempts. EMU got to the foul line a season-high 46 times as the Yellow Jackets committed 31 fouls. The Royals connected on 32 of those 46 attempts from the charity stripe. EMU also benefited from aggressive defense by collecting 10 steals and six blocks.

R-MC shot 41.2% from the floor and hit 10-of-21 three-point attempts. The Yellow Jackets hit 18-of-25 free throw attempts and outrebounded the Royals 44-42. Four of five starters battled foul trouble for much of the second half and overtime with all four having four personal fouls.

EMU will now take a week off for final exams and then will participate in the Bridgewater Tournament next weekend. On Saturday, the Royals face Ferrum at 4 p.m. followed by a Sunday match-up with Gallaudet at 2 p.m.
