Sophomore guard Jason Sager recorded his second double-double of the season with 15 points and 14 rebounds, but it was not enough as Eastern Mennonite University fell to Shenandoah University 65-63 on Tuesday night in Winchester, Va.
Shenandoah (3-0) jumped out to a 37-28 halftime lead while shooting a blistering 56.7% from the floor. However, the tides turned in the second-half with EMU (2-1) shooting 57.7% from the floor and the Hornets hitting just 29.6% of their shots. The Royals outscored the Hornets 35-28 in the second half but had a last-second game-tying shot bounce off the rim as time expired.
Sager's 15-point outing came on 6-of-12 shooting from the floor including 3-of-5 from the three-point arch. Sophomore guard Chris Ropp had 11 points for EMU. Sophomore center Jason Lentz had 10 points and six rebounds but missed significant minutes in the second half in foul trouble. Freshman Brad Parkes had 10 points for EMU. Senior forward E.J. Arrington, needing seven points to reach 1,000 in his career, scored three and missed most of the second half after injuring his knee.
Freshman forward Jeremiah Lawrence had game-high honors with 19 points and seven rebounds for the Hornets. Senior guard Chris Rhone scored 16 points while junior guard Kenneth Purnell had 15.
EMU held a 38-29 edge in rebounding and has outrebounded all three of its opponents this season.
EMU will now have off during Thanksgiving break and open the Old Dominion Athletic Conference portion of its schedule on Tuesday, December 1 when the Royals host Roanoke College at 7 p.m.
