EMU Loses Twelfth Straight Against #2 Hampden-Sydney

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Eastern Mennonite University men's basketball team dropped their twelfth straight contest against No. 2 ranked Hampden-Sydney College Monday evening at the University Commons. The Tigers won their 19th straight game of the 2002-2003 year winning 88-33.

The low scoring game found the underdog Royals tied for the first eight minutes of the ball game. The Tigers (19-0, 12-0 ODAC) then went on a 9-0 run grabbing a 12-point lead with 8:34 remaining before break. Hampden-Sydney pounded the ball inside scoring 26 points in the point in the first half. With a 20-point lead, with 2:29 left in the first half, the Tigers kept EMU at bay holding them to 23 first half points. Rebounding was a huge factor for the Tigers in the first half as they outrebounded EMU 25-14 and scored 13 second chance points.

Lane Brooks (Fredericksburg, Va./Courtland) scored 10 of his game-high 13 points in the first half. The Royals (2-17, 0-12 ODAC) shot just 34.5% from the floor.

In the second half, the Royals tried to cut the deficit early but the Tigers quickly regained their poseur and jumped out to 30-point advantage behind a 16-0 run. Things quickly got worse as the Tigers lead kept growing.

Hampden-Sydney controlled the paint much like the first half as they scored 22 points in the paint in the final period. EMU's pour shooting found the Royals scoring just ten points in the second half. The Royals converted just 3-of-25 from the floor in the final period as the Tigers kept extending their lead.

David Willson (Memphis, Tenn./MUS (Southern Methodist) scored 13 points off the bench. Jeff Monroe (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) added ten points. Bryan Williams (Stafford, Va./Evangel Christian) led EMU with 10 points.
