Lady Royals Drop Their Second Straight Game for the First Time This Season.
Emory, VA – Playing in their second game in as many days the Lady Royals were looking to pick up their 11th win of the 2002-03 season as they took on the Wasps of Emory & Henry College. In their previous meeting the Wasps set a NCAA Division III record for the most made three-point baskets in a game after connecting on 20 of 36 attempts dealing the Royals their worst loss of the 2001-2002 season.
As expected the Wasps (8-5, 5-2 ODAC) looked to score early from the perimeter and connected on three three-point baskets in the first 3:00 of the contest to spark an early 12-4 run. But the Royals (10-4, 5-4 ODAC) climbed back into the game with Freshman Amanda Renalds (Bridgewater, VA/Turner Ashby) leading the way. Renalds scored 10 first half points on 3-9 shooting and was a perfect 4-4 in the first half helping the Royals make a 19-4 run. Freshman Laura Ludholtz (Mt. Crawford, VA/Fort Defiance) came up with the first of her three blocks in the game and coasted to the rim for an uncontested lay-up to tie the game at 16 and Junior point-guard Heather Maslauskas (Hedgesville, WV/Hedgesville) broke through the defense on a drive to the basket to give the Royals their first lead of the game at the 8:50 mark. The Royals led by as many as 13 points in the first half receiving 10 first half point from Renalds and eight from Ludholtz, but the Wasps scored twice in the final minute of the first half to cut the Royals lead to nine with a half time score of 31-22. At the half the Royals were shooting 44.8% from the field while holding Emory and Henry to just 18.9% from the field.
The Royals increased their lead to double digits on the first play of the second half as Ludholtz collected a offensive rebound and scored off of Freshman teammate Carrie Grandstaff's (Luray, VA/Mt. Carmel Christian) missed three-point shot. But the Royals lead dwindled as the Royals went 5:00 without a basket and Emory & Henry closed to within three points with 11:00 to play in the game. The Wasps tied the game 49-49 with 4:50 to go and took the lead on two made free throws with 3:40 left in the game as the Royals could not get the basketball to drop through the hoop. The Royals did not score again until there was less than a minute to play. Emory & Henry made six free-throws in the final minute to win by a final score of 64-56.
Renalds finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Freshman Stephanie Mathews (Woodstock, VA/Central) finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Laura Ludholtz added 14 points and three blocked shots while Grandstaff finished with nine points and four assists.
