Softball Falls Twice on Saturday Senior Day

HARRISONBURG, Va. - EMU celebrated its lone senior, Kaliyah Braxton, on Saturday as they welcomed in Randolph Macon for a doubleheader.

In the opener, offense was the name of the game, as the teams combined for 22 runs and 32 hits. But it was Macon coming out on top, 15-7. In game two, the Royals bats were quited, as RMC picked up a 6-1 win to sweep EMU.

Highlights

First Inning
  • The Yellow Jackets put five on the board in the top of the first, using four hits and a pair of EMU errors, to take a 5-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the first, Aliza Judd, Destiny Jones and Meaghan Dean all singled, loading the bases. But the RMC pitcher picked up a pair of K's to leave the bases loaded.
Second Inning
  • A walk, a single and a double scored a run before Brooke Morris took over for Lane in the circle. An infield single scored one more, giving Randolph Macon a 7-0 lead.
  • EMU struck for three in their half of the second, with Aspen Jones picking up a one-out single and scoring on Payton Keesee's RBI double. Judd followed that up with an RBI double of her own, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Braxten Jones' RBI groundout, pulling EMU within four.
Third Inning
  • Macon got two of their runs back in the top of the third with a two-run homerun before Morris got a pair of fielder's choice groundouts to wrap up the inning.
Fifth and Sixth Innings
  • EMU got one back in the bottom of the fifth when B. Jones, Dean and Hannah Johnston all singled to load the bases. Mayhew reached first on an error as B. Jones scored, pulling EMU within five, 9-4.
  • In the top of the sixth, a sac fly plated a 10th run for the Yellow Jackets, and EMU went down in order in the bottom of the sixth, as RMC took a 10-4 lead into the final frame.
Seventh Inning
  • The Yellow Jackets put some room between them and the Royals in the top of the seventh, scoring five runs on six hits and an EMU error to lead 15-4.
  • EMU wasn't going down without a fight, however, as D. Jones led off with a single and came in to score on Dean's eighth homerun of the season. Two batters later, Mayhew blasted her first homerun of the season, pulling EMU within eight. But after RMC switched pitchers, back-to-back strikeouts ended the game, securing the win for Randolph Macon.
