GREENSBORO, NC - The Royals headed to North Carolina on Saturday for their final road doubleheader of the season, as they took on Guilford College.
In the opener, EMU battled throughout, even tying things with a run in the top of the ninth. But an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth gave the Quakers a walkoff 14-13 win. In game two, GC put up a seven spot in the first inning and scored in all but the third inning, en route to a 16-6 seven-inning win.

Highlights
First Inning
- Michael Duncan picked up a one-out single for EMU and stole second, putting a runner in scoring position. But after a walk to Daniel McGinnis, a pair of fly outs brought Guilford to the plate.
- A pair of singles, two stolen bases, two walks and a triple plated a pair of runs for Guilford and chased EMU starter Ryan Gimbel in the first. Ty Woods came in and GC was able to push two more across before Woods got out of a bases loaded jam with a fly out.
Second Inning
- EMU started chipping away at the Quaker lead in the top of the second when Noah Sanderson reached second on a two-out error and came in to score on Trevor Gjormand's RBI single, cutting the Royals deficit to 4-1.
- Guilford's four-run lead was brought back in the second when a wild pitch scored a run, but Woods picked up a strike out to end the threat.
Third Inning
- In the third, Erik Wilkinson singled and Hadikell Bruno and Dalton Rocke were hit by pitches, loading the bases. Sanderson followed with a two-RBI single to center, pulling the Royals within two, 5-3.
- A sac fly from GC in the bottom of the frame put Guilford back in front by three, but Andrew Wise got out of the inning with a fly out to send the game to the fourth.
Fourth and Fifth Innings
- The Royals bats exploded in the top of the fourth, as they surged ahead with six runs. Duncan walked and McGinnis and Wilkinson singled loading the bases. Trevor Selph doubled down the left field line, plating Duncan and McGinnis and keeping runners in scoring position.
- Bruno singled, scoring Wilkinson, and that was followed by a three-run homerun from Rocke giving EMU a 9-6 lead.
- Guilford didn't score in the bottom of the fourth but EMU went down in order in their half of the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, the Quakers went through three EMU pitchers, scoring six runs on three hits, four walks and a passed ball to pull back out ahead 12-10.
Sixth Inning
- Bruno led off the sixth with a single and came in to score on Rocke's second homerun of the day, pulling EMU within one, 12-11. Sanderson singled, stole second and went to third on Gjormand's base hit. Aidan Miller then grounded into a double play, but Sanderson scored, tying the game at 12.
- In the bottom of the sixth, after a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch, Max Fritts came in to pitch and got a fly out, but it was deep enough to plate a run for a 13-12 GC lead.
Ninth Inning
- Neither team scored in the seventh and eighth, as EMU came to bat in the ninth. Miller led off with a single and moved to second on a Quaker error. Duncan tried to sac bunt Miller over, but an error from the Quakers put Duncan on third and scored Miller, tying the game at 13. But the GC pitcher was able to get out of the jam to keep things tied.
- In the bottom of the frame, a leadoff single, followed by a hit-by-pitch put runners on first and second. A sac bunt moved both runners, which was followed by a walkoff single to center to plate the game-winning run.

Highlights
First Inning
- EMU struck first in game two, as Duncan drew a one-out walk, stole second and came in to score on McGinnis's RBI double. McGinnis went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Wilkinson's triple, putting the Royals ahead 2-0.
- Guilford came back, and then some, in their half of the first, using six hits, including a grand slam and a two-run homerun, to score seven runs before Nash Withers came in and got a strikeout with the Quakers leading 7-2.
Third Inning
- Back-to-back doubles from Duncan and McGinnis put a run across for EMU and McGinnis advanced to third on an error, but was left there after a strikeout and a ground out.
- The Quakers added four more runs on five hits and an error, to push their lead to eight, 11-3, after three.
Fourth and Fifth Innings
- An RBI single from Guilford gave them their 12th run in the bottom of the fourth, but in the top of the fifth, EMU added a trio of runs.
- Duncan was hit by a pitch and moved to third on McGinnis's single. Wilkinson's fielder's choice scored Duncan and an error put runners on second and third with nobody out. That was followed by a two-RBI double from Rocke, cutting EMU's deficit to six.
- The Quakers extended their lead back to nine with two hits and an error, leading 15-6 after five.
Sixth and Seventh Innings
- A solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth gave the Quakers a 16-6 lead, and EMU wasn't able to answer in the top of the seventh as GC picked up the mercy-rule win.

EMU is back on the diamond on Tuesday when they head to Winchester to take on #4 Shenandoah University. First pitch against the Hornets is set for 4:00 pm.
