HARRISONBURG, Va. – EMU Director of Athletics Carrie S. Bert '97, has announced the resignation of Track & Field Throws Coach Pete Szelwach.
"Coach Pete empowered student athletes to be active participants in their throwing development.," Bert said. "His positive impact makes his departure difficult for our throwers. His coaching style was a gift that has set them up for continued success. He is leaving EMU to pursue another career outside of coaching, one that has been a dream of his since childhood. We wish him success at his new endeavor."
Szelwach was named the Throws Coach at EMU in 2024, after a one-year stint at Pfeiffer University. In his year-plus at EMU, he made a significant impact on the T&F program, coaching three EMU records, six ODAC top-eight performances and 15 top-10 marks in EMU history.
"Pete is an outstanding coach and person," said
Bob Hepler, Director of Cross Country, Track & Field and Triathlon. "He had a tremendous impact on his athletes. His athletes have become a strong point of the Track & Field programs by setting school records, scoring points at ODAC Championships, being named to the NCAA All-Region Team, and earning many spots in the all time EMU top ten list! Pete also influenced his students academically and socially. The throws group is a close, cohesive unit because of Pete's guidance."
EMU will start the search for a new throws coach immediately. Interested applicants can find the full job posting
