Offensive Explosion Boosts Royals to Doubleheader Sweep of PSU Altoona

HARRISONBURG, Va. –  On a gorgeous Saturday for baseball, the Diamond Royals welcomed in Penn State Altoona for a doubleheader at Royals Field. The home crowd had plenty to cheer about as EMU scored a combined 34 runs across the two games to sweep the twin bill over the Lions.

Of note, EMU scored 11 innings in the fifth inning of game two, the most runs scored in an inning by the Diamond Royals since February 20, 2016, when they tallied 15 runs in the sixth inning of a 21-3 win over Juniata. The 21 runs overall in game two is the most by EMU in a game since they scored 22 against Mary Baldwin on February 26, 2025.

Records: EMU 5-5 | PSU Altoona 0-2

Game One: EMU 12, PSU Altoona 2 (7 innings)
WP: Carter Cashin (1-1)
LP: Andrew Crouse (0-1)

Highlights
  • After Cashin retired the side in the top of the first, the Royals went right to work offensively in the bottom half of the inning. With the bases loaded, Michael Duncan smashed a grand slam home run to left center field to put EMU up 4-0 quickly.
  • The visiting Lions got one of those runs back in the top of the third, but the Royals answered when Erik Wilkinson scored on a balk by the opposing pitcher.
  • The two teams got a run each again in the fourth inning. EMU's run came courtesy of a Dalton Rocke triple to left field, allowing Dylan Hall to touch home and put the Royals up 6-2.
  • From there, all of the offense belonged to the homestanding Royals. In the bottom of the sixth, Daniel McGinnis laced a single down the left field line, scoring both Rocke and Noah Sanderson to go up 8-2 after six innings.
  • EMU shut the door on game one with four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Wilkinson got things started with a double to right field to bring in Aidan Miller. Duncan followed that up with a single up the middle, allowing Wilkinson to score. Duncan then reached home himself as a result of a wild pitch by PSU Altoona. Finally, it was Trevor Gjormand who had the game-ending hit with a double to center field, sending Jett Cabanban to put EMU up 12-2 and give the Royals the win via the 10-run rule.
Statistical Leaders
Duncan: 3-for-3, 2B, HR (1), 2 runs, 5 RBIs
McGinnis: 2-for-4, run, 2 RBIs
Rocke: 1-for-3, 3B, run, RBI

Game Two: EMU 21, PSU Altoona 5 (7 innings)
WP: Zach Danielczyk (1-0)
LP: Eric Seick (0-1)

Highlights
  • Just like game one, the Diamond Royals set the tone early in game two by pushing six runs across in the first inning. The first run came on a Miller triple that allowed McGinnis to score easily. Wilkinson then smashed a two-run home run to right field to bring in himself and Miller. Trevor Selph kept it going with a base hit to center field to score Duncan. Hadikell Bruno put his stamp on the first inning with a triple to center field, opening the door for Selph and Sanderson to score. Just like that, EMU was 6-0 after just one inning.
  • PSU Altoona responded with two runs in the top of the second on a home run by Ben Ettien to left center field. However, the Royals quickly got those runs right back on a two-RBI double from Wilkinson to go up 8-2.
  • In the bottom of the third, it was McGinnis' turn to show off his hitting power, sending a ball sailing over the left field fence for a solo home run to boost EMU's lead to 9-2 after three innings.
  • The Lions pushed one run across in the top of the fourth, but again EMU had an answer. Bruno slapped a single to center field to bring Duncan home and put the Royals back up by seven, 10-3.
  • PSU Altoona edged a little closer in the top of the fifth with two runs to get within five at 10-5.
  • If there was still any doubt as to the game's outcome, the Royals erased it in emphatic fashion with an impressive 11 runs in the bottom of the fifth. Wilkinson began the scoring barrage by singling through the right side, a two-RBI hit that brought in Miller and McGinnis. Sanderson then slapped a base hit to right field, making it Wilkinson's turn to touch home plate. Selph then hit a single to about the same spot on the field as Sanderson, which opened the door for Duncan to run home. The Royals pushed in another run after Bruno got hit by a pitch. A ground rule double by Rocke sent in Selph and Brendan White. McGinnis hit a single to left center to send Bruno home, followed by a Miller double that brought Rocke and McGinnis. Wilkinson, who started the scoring in the inning, kept it going with a single to left field to plate McGinnis. Miller tagged up from third and scored a Ryan Harrison sacrifice fly to center field. With that, the Royals blew the game wide open, leading 21-5 after five innings. That score would hold until the seventh inning, once again activating the 10-run rule to end the contest.
Statistical Leaders
Wilkinson: 4-for-5, 2B, HR (1) 2 runs, 7 RBIs
McGinnis: 2-for-3, HR (1), 5 runs, 2 RBIs
