Baseball’s Valiant Comeback Falls Just Short at Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Twenty-four hours later than originally scheduled, the Diamond Royals headed east of the mountains to Fredericksburg to take on Mary Washington, one of EMU's annual non-conference opponents. Down 8-0 early, the Royals went on a spirited comeback to get back in the game, but the Eagles held on for a 13-11 on their home field.

Highlights
  • Mary Washington wasted no time assuming control of the game, pushed four runs across in the bottom of the first inning. The Eagles followed that up with an additional run in the second inning off a sac fly and then tacked on three more runs in the third to go up 8-0 on the Royals through three frames.
  • EMU got on the board with two runs in the top of the fourth. Jett Cabanban doubled to left field to bring home Michael Duncan. The next batter was Mattox Flatt, who grounded out to the second baseman but Noah Sanderson touched home in the process. That made the score Mary Washington 8, EMU 2 through four innings.
  • The Royals' comeback effort continued with two more runs in the fifth. Duncan reached base on an error by the Eagles' shortstop, opening the door for Erik Wilkinson and Aidan Miller to both score. That brought EMU within four runs, but Mary Washington countered with two runs of their own in the bottom half to go back up by six, 10-4.
  • EMU's bats came alive in the seventh to the tune of five runs. Wilkinson got the run parade started with a sacrifice fly to right field that brought in Daniel McGinnis. The next batter was Duncan, who also sent a sac fly to right to let Miller tag up and score. Hadikell Bruno then belted a two-RBI single to left field, bringing home Cabanban and Sanderson. Mattox Flatt capped off the seventh inning by reaching home when McGinnis was hit by a pitch. After three runs by the Eagles in the bottom half, EMU cut the deficit to 13-9.
  • The Royals' rally continued with two runs in the top of the eighth. Wilkinson reached home on a Cabanban groundout to second; then, Trevor Selph smacked a pinch hit single to right center field to bring in Sanderson.
  • EMU held Mary Washington scoreless in the bottom of the eighth to go to the ninth within two runs; however, the host Eagles retired the Royals side in the top of the ninth to shut down the door.
