Maroons Pick Up Saturday Sweep Over Royals

SALEM, Va. – EMU wrapped up a weekend on the road Saturday, taking on Roanoke College in an ODAC showdown.

The Maroons used a comeback in the first set, and took the next two, to complete the 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-15) sweep of the Royals.

Records: EMU 5-10, 2-4 ODAC | Roanoke 12-6, 3-3 ODAC

Highlights
  • Two kills from Logan Turchetta, one apiece from Emma Rogers and Lindsay Bly, and a block from Ella Lambert and Rogers, put the Royals ahead early. A 6-1 run pushed Roanoke ahead but EMU scored four straight to lead once again. The teams traded points before RC gave themselves some cushion with a 5-2 run for a 23-18 lead. EMU would win four of the next five points behind kills from Turchetta and Rogers, as well as a Bly ace, but a Maroons kill would give Roanoke a 1-0 lead.
  • A back-and-forth start to the second set would go EMU's way after a 5-0 run gave them 10-8 lead. Neither team could grab momentum, as Roanoke held a slight 6-4 lead over the next 10 points, to tie things at 14. The Maroons used two straight to lead 17-14 before EMU pulled back within one with kills from Rogers and Lambert. But that would be the final point for the Royals, as Roanoke reeled off eight straight points for a 2-0 advantage.
  • Once again EMU started with a slim advantage in the third set, but would fall behind as the Maroons surged ahead with an 8-1 tilt. After a Maroon kill put them ahead 13-7, EMU clawed back in with a 6-1 run, highlighted by two kills from Bly, to trail just 14-13. But just like in the second set, Roanoke would go on a big run, this time 11-2, as a Haley Atkins/Bly block and a Turchetta kill, would wrap up EMU's scoring.
