HARRISONBURG, Va. – After winning on the road at Averett Wednesday, the EMU Men's Soccer team looked to do the same at home for their Homecoming Game against the University of Lynchburg on Saturday. But in the end, the large Homecoming crowd did not go home happy as the Hornets, ranked eighth in the country in the United Soccer Coaches poll, dealt the Royals a 3-1 defeat.
Records: EMU 4-8-1, 1-3 ODAC | Lynchburg 9-1-2, 3-0-1 ODAC
Highlights
- The first half was fairly even through the opening 45 minutes, as Lynchburg only outshot EMU 6-5. Xavier Barravino led the Royals' attack with two shots on goal in the first 11 minutes.
- 45' | However, Lynchburg did manage to get on the board just before halftime with a shot just in front of the net by William Casey that went into the upper right corner of the net. Chris Bovo provided the assist. With that, Hornets led 1-0 at the break.
- 52' & 54' | The Hornets came out swarming in the second half with two goals in quick succession, one each for Jefferson Lopez Coreas and Fischer Daniel. That put visiting Lynchburg up 3-0.
- 78' | The Royals lit up the scoreboard late with a goal by Hector Ortiz that he booted in with his right foot off of a header assist by Chris Salazar as EMU avoided the shutout. It was Ortiz's third goal in as many games.
