Royals Fall to Maroons in Saturday ODAC Matchup

HARRISONBURG, Va. – A night after sweeping Hollins in their ODAC opener, the Royals welcomed in another southern Virginia foe: Roanoke.

EMU took the opening set, but the Maroons rallied to win the next three and leave Harrisonburg with a 3-1 (19-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-21) win.

Highlights

Set One: EMU 25, Roanoke 19
  • The teams swapped points to six apiece, before Roanoke went on a 3-0 run to take a 9-6 lead early on. RC eventually took an 11-8 lead, but the Royals rallied and went on a 9-1 run, highlighted by three Emma Greer kills, three straight Kaitlyn Custis service aces and a Kassidy Meadows ace.
  • Roanoke was able to chip away at the Royals lead, cutting it to one, 20-19. But EMU finished out the set, winning the final five points, including a kill from Lindsay Bly and a block from Bly and Kenley Smith, to take a 1-0 match lead.
Set Two: Roanoke 25, EMU 19
  • The Royals jumped out to a 6-2 lead aces from Custis and Felicity Jones and kills from Greer and Logan Turchetta. Roanoke would pull back even with the Royals, after a 4-0 run.
  • With EMU leading 8-7, the Maroons went on a 5-1 run, taking a 12-9 advantage. The teams exchanged blows to 16-16 after a kill from Greer and a Maroon error, but EMU would only pick up three more points, including kills from Bly and Meadows, as Roanoke took the set and tied the match at one apiece.
Set Three: Roanoke 25, EMU 18
  • This time it was Roanoke that pulled out ahead, taking an 11-4 lead to start the third set. EMU pulled within four, 13-9, after multiple Maroon errors, a Custis ace and a Turchetta kill.
  • The teams swapped point to 18-14 after a Roanoke service error, and EMU grabbed two more points off a Jada Parker kill and a Smith block, the Roanoke picked up five of the next seven points to take a 2-1 lead to the fourth set.
Set Four: Roanoke 25, EMU 21
  • Custis led off the fourth set with an ace, Greer added a kill and Greer/Smith picked up a block, to give EMU a 4-2 lead early on. Later in the set, with Roanoke leading 8-6, EMU went on a 5-1 run, including another Custis ace, to take an 11-9 lead.
  • EMU continued to lead, and got to 15-13, before Roanoke retook the lead with an 8-1 run. Roanoke got to match point, leading 24-18, but EMU continued to fight, picking up kills from Smith and a Maroon error, to pull within three. But Roanoke wrapped up the win with a kill, to take the set and the match.

What's Next
