Men's Volleyball Falls to Trine, SVU in Royals Tournament Finale

HARRISONBURG, Va. – EMU wrapped up their weekend in the EMU Royals Tournament on Saturday, taking on Trine, before finishing the day with #2 Southern Virginia.

In the opener, it was the Thunder picking up a 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-19) win. In the final match, the Knights were too much for EMU, winning 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-20) in the tournament's final matchup.

Highlights

Set One – Trine 25, EMU 16
  • EMU took a 2-1 lead from kills by Jose Melendez and Daeman Odom. Trine pulled ahead with a 3-1 run, before the teams swapped points to Trine leading 7-5.
  • Two points from each squad, including a Sebastian Clemente kill and an Andre Mills service ace, tied things at seven. After Trine took a two-point lead, Melendez picked up a kill to pull within one. But the Thunder went on 10-3 lead, to lead 19-11.
  • Kills from Odom and Mills, along with a Trine service error, pulled EMU within six, but Trine finished things out with a 4-1 run, including the final three points of the set.
Set Two – Trine 25, EMU 13
  • Trine took a 5-2 lead to start the second set, and the teams traded points to 9-7, Thunder. Trine then went on a 7-2 tilt, with EMU's points coming from an error and an Odom kill.
  • After a Thunder service error made the score 20-12, Trine, the Thunder scored three straight points to take an 11-point lead. A block from Odom and Derek Diaz cut the deficit to 10, but Trine finished out the set, winning the final two points.
Set Three – Trine 25, EMU 19
  • With things tied at two, Trine pulled ahead by three with a 6-1 run, for an 8-3 advantage. EMU pulled back within three with a 4-2 run, with kills from James Powell, Mills and a blocking error.
  • Trine extended their lead to five, EMU used a 3-0 run, including back to back blocks from Odom and Odom/Mills, to cut the Thunder lead to two. The teams swapped points, and the Royals were able to cut the lead to one twice, at 15-14 and 16-15.
  • Trine responded with a 4-1 run, leading 20-16 late. Three would be as close as the Royals would get at 20-17, 21-18 and 22-19, as Trine ended the match with a 3-0 run for the win.

Highlights

Set One - SVU 25, EMU 15
  • Two Knights service errors tied things at two to start the set, before SVU went on a 7-1 run, taking a 9-3 lead. The Royals first six points came on SVU service errors, and then a kill from Clemente and a block from Clemente and Powell, pulled EMU within five, 13-8. 
  • Clemente and Mills had a pair of kills to keep EMU within five, but SVU extended their lead with an 8-2 tilt, to lead 23-12. Two errors and a Mills kill wrapped up the points for EMU in the set, as SVU took the opener, and a 1-0 lead. 
Set Two - SVU 25, EMU 15
  • Two service errors and a kill from Ezekiel Awkward, pulled the Royals within one, early in set two. A 7-2 Knights run, pushed them ahead 11-5 before back to back points from EMU cut their deficit to four. 
  • Four SVU points sandwiched an Odom kill, before Mills and an error added to EMU's total. With SVU leading 15-10, the Knights reeled off six straight points to extend their lead to 11. An Odom kill and a Derek Diaz ace, along with kills from Powell and Awkward, added to EMU's total points, but SVU once again finished things off with a kill, for a 2-0 lead. 
Set Three - SVU 25, EMU 20
  • SVU took a small 4-2 lead in the third, before EMU answered with with a 5-1 run, highlighted by kills from Powell, Bennett de Tenley, Mills, Awkward and a Mills ace, giving EMU a 7-5 lead. 
  • EMU was able to take an 8-6 lead, but SVU responded with a run of 6-1, retaking the lead, 12-9. The Royals kept battling, pulling back within one with an Odom kill and a pair of errors and kept SVU within two  to three to 17-15. 
  • Four straight points from the Knights gave them some breathing room, 21-15 and 22-16, but EMU scored three straight with two kills from Mills and an ace from Jamaury Starks, to trail just 22-19. An error and a kill put SVU at match point, and they would wrap up the sweep with a kill, picking up the win.

What's Next
EMU will be back on the road on Tuesday, when they head to Salem for an ODAC matchup against Roanoke. First serve against the Maroons is set for 7 pm.
