Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Royals Lead Early but Ultimately Fall to Nationally-Ranked Washington & Lee

LEXINGTON, Va.- The EMU Women's Basketball marched into Lexington on Wednesday for the opportunity to take on nationally-ranked Washington & Lee. The Royals had their work cut out for them against the two-time defending ODAC champions. EMU fought hard early, but it was the Generals who ultimately won the battle by the final score of 66-50.

Jeriyah Osborne had a game to remember, scoring a career-high 22 points and leading the Royals in assists, steals, and blocks. Grace Burke also put double figures with 11 points on 3-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc. Lauren Townsend was not far away from a double-double, scoring eight points and pulling down nine rebounds.

The Royals held reigning ODAC Player of the Year Mary Schleusner to 10 points on 3-of-16 shooting from the field, which is tied for her lowest output of the season. However, three other Generals did score in double figures, led by Sarah Zimmerman with 12 points.

Highlights
First Quarter
Washington & Lee tallied the first four points of the night, but then the Royals roared with a 12-0 scoring run to take an early 12-4 lead. Lauren Townsend got the EMU scoring started with a three-pointer at the 8:47 mark, following closely by another three from Laila Glymph just 58 seconds of game action later. After back-to-back jumpers from Osborne, Townsend put the exclamation point on the run with a driving layup leading to a W&L timeout at 3:38 left in the period. The Generals did strike back with a 7-0 run to close the quarter, but it was the Royals leading 12-11 at the end of the first quarter.

Second Quarter
The Generals took a 13-12 lead on a layup from Schleusner, but EMU answered with a pull-up jumper from Jayda Jones. With the score 19-15 W&L, EMU went on a 7-0 rally that included back-to-back three-pointers from Grace Burke and Osborne to go out front 22-19. However, the Generals went on the attack with a 15-0 run to close the first half, pulling out to a 34-22 lead at the break.

Third Quarter
It was a back-and-forth third quarter, with EMU outscoring W&L 17-16. After the Generals built their lead to 16, the Royals rattled off six unanswered points with a Glymph three-pointer and free throws from Osborne and Townsend. After an Osborne driving layup drew EMU within 11, W&L went on a 7-0 run to swell their lead back up to 18. Burke ate into the deficit with back-to-back three pointers in the final 45 seconds to bring the Royals within 11, 50-39 through three quarters.

Fourth Quarter
The Royals got as close as 10 off of a Townsend driving layup at the 9:07 mark, but the Generals removed any doubt in the outcome with an 11-2 run over almost three minutes of game action. Osborne scored seven points in the fourth quarter to cap off her career night.
