Bridgewater Beats Royals in Latest Rendition of Route 42 Rivalry

BRIDGEWATER, Va.- The EMU Women's Basketball team did not have to travel far for their road game on Wednesday, making the short drive down Route 42 to renew their rivalry with Bridgewater College. It turned out to be a long night for the Royals, as the host Eagles got the better of EMU by the score of 67-33.
The play of Jakayla Johnson was a bright spot for the Royals as she easily set a career high with 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field.
Bridgewater were led by Jaden Alsberry and Jay Garcia, who scored 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Highlights
First Quarter
EMU kept the game close early as a Jayda Jones jumper and a three-pointer from Jeriyah Osborne put the Royals within one at 6-5 halfway through the opening period. Bridgewater then went on an 11-1 run spanning the final 4:45 of the quarter to take a 17-6 lead over EMU through 10 minutes of play.

Second Quarter
The game got away from the Royals in the second quarter as the Eagles outscored them. Grace Burke opened the scoring in the period with a three-pointer against her former team at the 7:48 mark. But Bridgewater then took over, going on a 14-0 run to open up 31-9 lead over EMU at the half.
 
Third Quarter
Laila Glymph opened the second half with a free throw 47 seconds into the third quarter. But then the Eagles went on a rally again, scoring 15 unanswered points across 3:55 of game time to open up a 46-10 lead. The Royals closed the gap a bit, outscoring Bridgewater 12-4 over the final 4:01 of the period to make it 50-22 Eagles after three.
 
Fourth Quarter
Both teams cleared the benches and gave their backups some playing time in the final quarter. Johnson particularly shined in the final quarter, scoring seven points in the period.

EMU Women's Basketball will look to turn their fortunes around when they host Roanoke College in Yoder Arena this Saturday, Jan. 25. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m., and it will be the team's Alumni, Faculty and Staff Appreciation Game.
