GENEVA, NY – EMU wrapped up their time in New York on Saturday, with a doubleheader against #10 ranked Hobart College.

In the opener, EMU was able to take a set off the Statesmen, but it was Hobart picking up a 3-1 (25-23, 25-20, 22-25, 25-17) win. In the second match, Hobart showed their strength, sweeping EMU 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-20).

EMU vs Hobart – Match One

Records: EMU 1-1, 0-0 ODAC | #10 Hobart College 6-0, 0-0 UVC

Highlights
Set One – Hobart 25, EMU 23
  • The match started pretty even for both teams, with Hobart taking a slight 9-6 lead through the first 15 points. A Statesmen error and an Andre Ward kill pulled EMU within one, and after back-to-back Hobart points, EMU went on a 5-1 run, picking up kills from Jose Melendez and Pierce Donnelly, along with a Samuel Gomez ace, to take a 13-12 lead.
  • After a Statesmen timeout, Hobart retook the lead, 16-15, but neither team could grab momentum as the lead kept flip flopping. After a Donnelly solo block put the Royals ahead 19-18, Hobart went on a 4-1 tilt, forcing an EMU timeout.
  • Late in the set, EMU would pick up a pair of kills from Mills to make the score 24-23 Statesmen, but an EMU service error would put Hobart up 1-0.
Set Two – Hobart 25, EMU 20
  • EMU jumped out to a 7-3 lead to start the second set, picking up kills from Donnelly and Sebastian Clemente, an ace from Mills and a block from Diego Morales Torres and Daemon Odom.
  • The Royals would extend their lead to as many as six, 11-5 and 12-6, before Hobart went on a 6-1 run to cut their deficit to one. A service error and a Jose Melendez ace would push EMU's lead back to three, but once again, Hobart would eventually tie things at 16.
  • With EMU leading 17-16, Hobart finished out the set on a 9-3 run, with James Powell picking up a kill, as the Statesmen took a 2-0 lead.
Set Three – EMU 25, Hobart 22
  • Like the second set, it was EMU jumping out to an early lead, this time 6-2, using a pair of kills from Mills and a Mills solo block. Later in the set, with the Royals holding a slim 14-12 lead, a Statesmen error, a Melendez ace and a Mills kill extended EMU's lead to five, forcing a Hobart timeout.
  • It was a good timeout, as Hobart followed it with a 6-1 run to tie things at 18. But Donnelly slammed three straight kills to put the Royals back on top, 21-18.
  • Hobart would get within one at 23-22, but a service error and a big block from Melendez and Mills gave EMU the set, pulling them within one, 2-1.
Set Four – Hobart 25, EMU 17
  • The Statesmen took an early 3-0 lead to start the fourth set, before a kill from Donnelly and a block from Melendez tied things at three apiece. An error and a trio block gave EMU a 5-4 lead, but Hobart responded with a 10-3 run, taking a 15-7 advantage.
  • After a kill from Melendez, Hobart scored three straight and four of five, for a 19-10 lead. Three errors from Hobart pulled EMU within six, and the teams swapped points to 23-17. The Statesmen finished out the match with a kill and a service ace, for a 3-1 win.
