DANVILLE, Va. – It was a day later than expected, but the Royals finally got into ODAC play on Sunday, heading down to Danville to take on Averett.
It was a pitcher's duel on game one, with AU coming out on top 1-0. In game two, both pitchers were once again dealing, sending the game to extras, where Averett was able to push across a run for a walkoff 2-1 win.
EMU vs Averett – Game One
Records: EMU 4-6, 0-1 ODAC | Averett 7-10, 1-0 ODAC
WP: Taylor Sullivan (3-6)
LP: Makayla Cyzick (3-5)
Highlights
- The Royals reached base on an error in the first inning, but couldn't push anything across. The game's lone run was scored by the Cougars in the bottom of the first after a leadoff single. The runner stole second, moved to third on a single and came in to score on another base hit. But Cyzick slammed the door shut on anymore runs with a pair of strikeouts.
- Sydney Orndroff led off the second with a base hit, but was stranded at second. EMU had its best chance in the top of the third, as Carsen Brake, Taylor Umberger and Samantha Hensley all singled, loading the bases with just one out. But a 3-1-4 double play ended the inning and kept EMU off the board.
- Averett put runners on in the third, fourth and sixth innings, while EMU added a Brooke Morris single in the fifth and a Cyzick single in the seventh, but none of those runners would cross the plate as Averett picked up the one-run win.
Statistical Leaders
Cyzick: 1-3, 6.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 7 K

WP: Kaci Stephenson (4-4)
LP: Cyzick
(3-6)
Highlights
- Umberger led off the game with a single, but EMU wasn't able to get anyone across. Natalye Graham, who got the start in the circle, mowed the Cougars down in the first to keep the game scoreless.
- Grace Fravel doubled to start the second, moved to third on Cyzick's groundout and came in to score on a groundout from Destiny Jones, for a 1-0 lead. Neither team was able to get anything going in the third, but in the fourth, EMU put runners on first and second after back-to-back singles from Sydney Orndorff and Fravel, but like in game one, a double play erased the momentum and kept EMU's lead at 1-0.
- After a scoreless fourth, Averett evened the score in the fifth after a leadoff double, a sac bunt and an RBI single.
- Neither team was able to do anything in the sixth and seventh, sending the game to extras. In the top of the eighth, Kendyll Eddins started the inning at second, moved to third on Umberger's single, but was thrown out at home on a fielder's choice. In the Cougars half of the eighth, Cyzick, who came in to pitch in the seventh, got two quick outs, before a wild pitch put the winning run on third. A single up the middle wrapped up the Averett win, scoring the runner from third.
