Baseball Breezes Past W&L for Midweek ODAC Win

HARRISONBURG, Va. – EMU Baseball sought to bounce back quickly from a Tuesday defeat, playing host to ODAC foe Washington & Lee for a Wednesday conference showdown. Mother Nature made its presence felt at Royals Field, with high winds and blustery conditions throughout the afternoon. In the end, the Royals used a combination of prolific batting and opportunistic pitching to pick up a 13-10 victory, sending the Generals marching back to Lexington empty-handed.

Damen Tapscott stepped up as the starting pitcher, going seven innings and striking out six General batters. All nine batters in the Royals' lineup collected at least one hit each, with seven of those batters notching a multi-hit game.

Highlights
  • W&L made an opening statement in the top of the first with a three-run home run to right field by Drew Larsen. However, the Royals countered quickly in the bottom of the frame with two runs of their own. Nick Arnold doubled to left field to bring home Dylan Hall. Aidan Miller came up to bat next, reaching first on a throwing error while Arnold scored to draw EMU with one at 3-2 after one.
  • The Royals went on a scoring spree in the third and fourth innings, collecting eight runs over that two-inning span. It all started in the third with an Ethan Spraker single to right center, bringing Hall home for the second time in the game. Miller then singled through the left side for 2 RBIs as Arnold and Alex Gulisano reached home. Matt Harding and Erik Wilkinson then grounded out on back-to-back at-bats, but they both resulted in RBIs when Spraker and Miller touched home plate. In the fourth inning, Spraker belted a 2-RBI single to right center, plating Hall and Arnold. Spraker would complete his own trip around the bases as well following a base hit from Harding.
  • The Generals began to chip away at the lead in a bit, scoring one run apiece in the fifth and seventh innings. EMU got one back in bottom of the seventh as Guilsano doubled to centerfield, opening the door for Logan Mason to reach home. That made the score 11-5 in favor of the Royals after seven innings.
  • W&L made the home fans sweat a bit by getting four runs across in the top of the eighth to get within two at 11-9. The Royals opened the lead back up to four runs by scoring two in the bottom half of the eighth. Daniel McGinnis singled through the left side to usher Miller home. Two batters later, Erik Wilkinson bunted his way to first base, allowing pinch runner Drew Petitt to score. That put the Royals out front 13-9 going to the ninth.
  • Colby Eidson and Ryan Gimbel teamed up to limit W&L to one run in the top of the ninth to put the game away.
