Late Inning Rally Helps Royals Split with MBU

HARRISONBURG, Va. - For just the second time this season thanks to the weather, the Royals were able to get on their field, as they welcomed Mary Baldwin to Gehman Field.

The Fighting Squirrels used 13 hits in game one to take a 7-1 win, but EMU rebounded in game two, picking up a big RBI single from Emerson Adkins in the sixth for a 5-4 win.

Records: EMU 2-4, 0-0 ODAC | Mary Baldwin 4-5, 0-0 USA South

WP: McCreery (1-2)
LP: Makayla Cyzick (2-3)
Sv: Frazier (1)

Highlights
  • Cyzick cruised in the first inning, picking up a pair of strikeouts to put MBU down in order. In the second, the Fighting Squirrels were able to load the bases, but another strikeout kept the game knotted at zero. Sydney Orndorff picked up EMU's first hit in the second, with a single up the middle, but she was picked off second to end the inning.
  • Mary Baldwin used three singles and a sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead in the third. EMU was able to chip into the lead in the bottom of the fourth, when Grace Fravel led off with a single. Orndorff followed that up with a base hit and Fravel came around to score on a pair of MBU errors.
  • Four runs on four hits broke the game open for Mary Baldwin in the fifth, before Natalye Graham came in and was able to get out of a bases loaded jam. The Squirrels added another run on two hits in the seventh. EMU was able to load the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but a double play ended the game.

EMU vs Mary Baldwin - Game Two

Records: EMU 3-4, 0-0 ODAC | Mary Baldwin 4-6, 0-0 USA South

WP: Cyzick (3-3)
LP: Tillman (0-1)

Highlights
  • Graham got the start in game two, and worked around a two-out triple in the first inning to keep MBU off the board. The Royals bats came alive in their half of the first, as Samantha Hensley picked up a two-out double and came in to score on Fravel's RBI single. Orndorff stayed hot at the plate with a double of her own, driving in Fravel to give EMU a 2-0 lead.
  • Mary Baldwin responded with three runs in the second and added an insurance run in the fourth for a 4-2 lead.
  • Back-to-back singles from Destiny Jones and Hensley put runners on first and second for Fravel, who drove a ball into left-center for an RBI basehit, plating Jones. Neither team was able to score in the fourth and MBU was shut down in the fifth. EMU tied the game in their half of the fifth when Jones launched her third homerun of the season over the left field fence.
  • Cyzick came in to pitch in the sixth and MBU was able to get runners on second and third, but she settled down and got the final two batters to strand runners in scoring position. In the Royals half of the sixth, Orndorff led off with a single and Gracie Conner came in to pinch run. Umberger laid down a spectacular bunt to shortstop to put Conner on third but she was later thrown out at home. Cyzick ended up on second after a fielder's choice, and she came around to score, what would be the game-winner, on Adkins' RBI single to center. EMU's defense, specifically Aspen Jones, came up big in the seventh, helping EMU secure the win.
