Royals’ Spirited Effort Falls Short Against Bridgewater

HARRISONBURG, Va.- After a trip to Bridgewater earlier this season, it was EMU's turn to host the Route 42 Rivalry. Unfortunately, despite the change in venue, the result was the same as the Royals fell to the Eagles 63-53.

Kayla Surles continued her great play of late, leading all scorers with 22 points on 7-of-17 shooting from the field, including 6-of-8 from beyond the arc. Trinity Washington added eight points, while Mya Hamlet and Brii Redfearn contributed six points apiece.

Bridgewater wound up with four players in double figures, led by India Dailey, who tallied 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Jaden Alsberry, Riley Corcoran, and Jay Garcia pitched in 11, 10, and 10 points, respectively.

Highlights
First Quarter
The Royals roared out of the gates, opening up an 11-3 lead going into the first media timeout, with six of this points coming from Surles. The Eagles got within four, but then EMU responded with back-to-back baskets by Washington to make the score 16-7 in favor of the Royals at the end of the first.

Second Quarter
Bridgewater found their groove to start the second quarter, going on an 8-0 scoring run over the first 1:53 of the frame. Surles stopped the Eagle rally with a floating jumpshot. Following a pair of Bridgewater free throws, Surles drained her third three-pointer of the contest to put the Royals out front 21-17. With Bridgewater up one, Jayla Gray added a layup and Caris Lucas drilled a three-pointer as the Royals took a 29-28 lead into the locker room.

Third Quarter
The Eagles opened the second half on fire with an 8-2 scoring run, capped by four unanswered points by Alsberry. Lalia Glymph, Gray, and Hamlet each found the nylon to keep EMU in the game, going to the fourth trailing Bridgewater 42-37.

Fourth Quarter
Surles struck again to open the fourth with a three-pointer to draw the Royals within two. EMU got within a point thanks to another Surles three-pointer at the 4:48 mark, but Bridgewater outscored the Royals 9-0 the rest of the way to pull away for the win.
