Baseball Battles to The End but Falls to Nationally-Ranked CNU

HARRISONBURG, Va. – It was opening day for EMU Baseball on Sunday as they traveled east for a tough test against the 20th-ranked Christopher Newport Captains.

Undeterred by their opponent's national ranking, the Royals went toe-to-toe with the Captains, getting within one run and loading the bases in the ninth inning. CNU, however, buckled down to get the final out and send EMU home with an 8-7 defeat.

Highlights
  • The Royals wasted no time getting their first run of 2024 when Ethan Spraker sent Dylan Hall home on a fielder's choice in the first inning to give EMU an early 1-0 lead.
  • EMU maintained their 1-0 advantage until the bottom of the fourth when CNU scored the tying run on a balk. But the Royals bounced back quickly in the top of the fifth, taking the 2-1 lead on an Aidan Miller sacrifice fly that plated Nick Arnold. CNU countered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 3-2.
  • EMU had its most productive offensive inning in the sixth, scoring three runs. Dylan Hall smashed a double to left center to bring home Erik Wilkinson. Two batters later, Arnold hit a sac fly of his own, allowing Alex Guilsano to score. That brought Spraker to the plate, who struck again with a single to left field, getting Hall to home plate. EMU went to the bottom of the sixth up 5-3, but the lead was short-lived as CNU plated four runners to re-take the lead 7-5 through six.
  • Following a scoreless seventh, the Royals and Captains scored a run apiece in the eighth. EMU's run came when Logan Mason singled to the CNU third baseman, who then committed a throwing error, giving Guilsano an opening to score.
  • EMU went to the ninth within striking distance of CNU at 8-6. After two quick strikeouts, the Royals loaded up the bases and then Hall drew a walk to cut the deficit in half. Unfortunately, the Captains then struck out the next batter to end the game, leaving the Royals just short of a potential upset.
