Women’s Basketball Defeats Hollins for Senior Night Win

HARRISONBURG, Va.- The EMU Women's Basketball team concluded their 2023-24 regular season with a showdown versus Hollins in Senior Day. Before the game, Laila Glymph and Kayla Surles were honored for their achievements and contribution to the program. The celebratory tune carried over to the game as the Royals led for all but 49 seconds on their way to a convincing 66-54 victory. With the win, the Royals finished with a record of 6-6 in the friendly confines of Yoder Arena.

Surles, as she has done many times this season, led EMU in scoring with 19 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field. Mya Hamlet also had a performance to remember, coming just one rebound shy of a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds. On her Senior Day, Glymph added five points and hauled down seven rebounds.

Hollins had two players score in double figures with Sarah Morales and Zaria Holden notching 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Highlights
First Quarter
Hollins initiated the scoring with a free throw from Holden. However, the Royals took over from there, going on a 10-0 for a span of 1:45. The rally included four points from Surles and two points apiece from Osborne, Trinity Washington, and Jayda Jones. The teams then went back-and-forth for the remainder of the quarter, with the Royals holding the 18-11 edge after one.

Second Quarter
EMU picked up right where they left off in the second quarter, kicking off the period by going on a 10-3 scoring run that included five points apiece from Glymph and Hamlet to extend their lead to 28-14. Hollins found their footing a bit at the end of the frame, outscoring EMU 6-2 over the final 3:35. However, EMU held the 34-23 lead going into halftime.

Third Quarter
The third quarter was largely even, with EMU outpacing Hollins 18-15 for the frame. The Royals accounted for the final four points of the period with a free throw each from Washington and Surles, followed by a Hamlet jumper with 32 seconds remaining.

Fourth Quarter
Surles got the fourth quarter scoring started with a two-point jumper at the 8:54 mark. Hollins got as close as eight points on the strength of a Missy Hazard three-pointer and two free throws from Morales, but EMU kept their opponents at arm's length the rest of the way to secure a Senior Day win.

What's Next
The EMU Women's Basketball players and coaches now turn their focus to the ODAC Women's Basketball Tournament, competing as the #10 seed. The Royals will travel to seventh-seeded Lynchburg for a First Round Game on Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m.
