Jayla Gray’s Double-Double Not Enough for Women’s Basketball in Loss at Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va.- Following a five-game homestand, EMU Women's Basketball took their show on the road, hoping to get back in the win column at the University of Lynchburg. Unfortunately, the Hornets handed the Royals their third straight loss by a final of 60-49.

The Royals' shooting went as cold as the frigid weather outside, shooting just 24.6 percent (15-of-61) from the field. By comparison, Lynchburg shot 44 percent (22-of-50) from the floor, including 32 percent  (9-of-28) from three-point land.

Jayla Gray and Jeriyah Osborne led the Royals with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Gray also pulled down 11 rebounds for a double-double. For the Hornets, three players put double figures, led by 15 points each from Brooke Cason and Kate Littlejohn.

Highlights
First Quarter
Cason scored nine of the Hornet's first 11 points, all on three points, to pull the home team out a to an 11-4 lead over the Royals. EMU got within two to thanks a to a Laila Glymph layup and a three-pointer by Gray, but Lynchburg answered back with the final five points of the frame to make it 16-9 after 10 minutes.

Second Quarter
Lauren Townsend got the second quarter going with a pair of free throws to make the score 16-11. However, the Hornets buzzed ahead with a 12-0 scoring run over 4:37 to pull away with a 28-11 advantage. Ultimately, Lynchburg led 39-19 at the break.
 
Third Quarter
The Royals attempted a comeback with a 6-2 run to open the second half, with Gray accounting for four of those points. But Lynchburg did enough in the quarter to maintain a double-digit lead of 15 going into the fourth.
 
Fourth Quarter
EMU came out with a determined 7-2 run over the first 2:42 of the fourth quarter to get within 10 at 46-36. The rally featured a Laila Glymph three-pointer as well as four points from Osborne. However, the Royals got no closer as Lynchburg sealed their victory.

What's Next
The EMU Women's Basketball team will take a break from ODAC play next Saturday, Dec. 14 with a trip to Lancaster Bible College. Tip-off against the Chargers is set for 2 p.m.
