Glymph’s Double-Double Pushes Royals Past Mary Washington for 54-52 Win

HARRISONBURG, Va.- Less than 24 hours removed from a narrow season-opening loss, the EMU Women's Basketball team hoped to rebound in a Saturday matinee showdown with Mary Washington. In a tight matchup that came down to the closing seconds, the Royals pulled out a big 54-52 victory over the visiting Eagles.
Laila Glymph, a fifth-year senior from Culpeper, Va., stood out for EMU, collecting a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Jeriyah Osborne also had a great afternoon, tallying 19 points and pulling down six rebounds.

Records: EMU 1-1 | Mary Washington 0-2

Highlights
First Quarter
Points were hard to come by for both teams in the opening 10 minutes. Jayda Jones got the Royals going with a floating jumpshot at just under two minutes into the game, followed closely by two Glymph free throws. With 1:34 left in the frame, Lauren Townsend drilled a three-pointer off of an assist from Glymph to put the Royals out front 11-5 at the end of the first quarter.

Second Quarter
Mary Washington started the second period on a good note with back-to-back layups from Juliona Mable and Rileigh Weaver to draw within two at 11-9. However, the Royals answered with a Glymph layup and an Osborne three-pointer. Osborne scored nine straight points for EMU over a nearly four-minute span. A floating jumpshot by Glymph put the Royals on top 24-18 going into the locker room at halftime.

Third Quarter
The Eagles ate into the Royals' cushion with an 8-3 scoring run over the first four-and-a-half minutes of the second half. EMU countered by outscoring Mary Washington 11-5 for the remainder of the period, including three-pointers from Glymph and Grace Burke. As a result, EMU took a 38-31 lead into the closing 10 minutes.

Fourth Quarter
Following a Glymph free throw to open the period, Mary Washington went on an 11-2 scoring run to take their first lead of the afternoon at 42-41. However, Glymph glimmered for the Royals with five straight points, sinking two free throws and a three-pointer, putting the home team back out front 46-42. The back-and-forth quarter continued as the Eagles soared with an 8-0 run over 1:59 to take the lead back at 50-46. EMU answered with four consecutive free throws, three from Glymph and one from Osborne to tie things up at 50. The Eagles got back up by two on an Adeline Riner driving layup. But the Royals made one play than the Eagles down the stretch. Osborne drilled a hook shot with 1:45 left to tie it again at 52 apiece. Fittingly, the fifth-year senior Glymph was the hero of the day, putting in a layup with exactly one minute left. The Royals then held on defensively to earn their first win of the season.
