Royals Fall to Nationally-Ranked Eagles in Road Matchup

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – After a weekend in PA, the Royals women's volleyball team continued their road trip to start the season, taking on #22 Mary Washington.
EMU battled, but ultimately dropped a 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-16 ) decision to the Eagles.

Highlights
A kill from Laney Cline knotted things early before UMW went on a 9-3 run, taking a 10-4 lead. A Lizzy Kirkton kill, ace and an Eagle error pulled EMU within three but Mary Washington answered with five straight, extending their lead to eight. A pair of UMW errors was followed by a trio of Eagle points, forcing EMU to take a timeout. Out of the break, kills from Cline and Megan Miller, along with a Miller ace, cut the Mary Washington lead to five, 18-13. The Eagles would take the set, scoring seven of the next 10 points.

A 14-2 UMW run started the second set before a 9-3 EMU run, highlighted by a Kenley Smith block and kills from Kirkton, Sophia Denby and a Karla Hostetter ace, pulled the Royals to with six at 17-11. UMW picked up three straight and the teams traded points until an Eagle kill gave them the set win and a 2-0 lead.

UMW started set three with a 6-2 lead, but a kill from Denby cut the lead to three. Three straight from the Eagles pushed stretched their lead to six but an error and a Hostetter ace brought the Royals back within four. A 3-0 UMW run caused an EMU timeout and out of the break, EMU scored four of the next six, including kills from Cline and Denby to make the score 15-10. The Royals followed up two UMW points with a 4-1 run with points from Denby and Miller, to pull EMU to 18-14. A 4-0 lead pushed the Eagle lead to eight but EMU kept fighting, with an Eagle error and a Hostetter ace. But Mary Washington wrapped up the set with the final three points to take the match.
