Royals Fall to Generals in Midweek Matchup

LEXINGTON, Va. – The EMU women's basketball team headed south on Wednesday for its penultimate road game.

The Royals had big games from Mya Hamlet and Brii Redfearn but it was Washington and Lee picking up the home win, 95-64.

Records: EMU 9-14, 4-12 ODAC | Washington and Lee 16-6, 13-2 ODAC

Highlights

First Quarter

The Generals jumped out to a 5-0 lead before a Hamlet layup put EMU on the board. W&L was able to extend their lead to 10, 16-6, before Hamlet's three cut the lead to seven. After a General basket, Redfearn's jumper kept the deficit at seven before a Redfearn three pulled EMU within four. W&L pushed the lead back to six, 20-14, to end the first quarter.

Second Quarter

Trinity Washington kicked off the Royals scoring in the second quarter, cutting W&L's lead to four. The Generals responded with a 9-0 run before Redfearn's jumper stopped the scoring run. Later in the quarter, after W&L pushed their lead to 16, five straight points from Redfearn and Hamlet brought EMU to within 11. Caris Lucas hit a three right before halftime to wrap up the scoring for EMU, sending the teams to the locker room with W&L leading 42-28.

Third Quarter

EMU put together a strong third quarter offensively, but the Generals were red hot from the field, outscoring EMU 30-19, while shooting almost 55% from the field. Seven of the Royals 19 points came from the free throw line in the third but it was W&L that held a 72-47 lead heading into the fourth.

Fourth Quarter

A pair of free throws from Hamlet and a Lauryn Moore three started EMU on a 5-0 run in the fourth. The teams swapped threes with W&L keeping their lead at 21, before going on an 11-0 run, that was stopped by a layup from KK Johnson. Jayda Jones, Moore and Hamlet were able to add points for EMU in the fourth before Washington and Lee closed out the win.

What's Next

EMU will be off for a week before wrapping up their 2022-23 home slate next Wednesday. They take on Shenandoah inside Yoder Arena in the team's Play4Kay breast cancer awareness game. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 pm.
