HARRISONBURG, Va. - The EMU women's basketball wrapped up their 2022-23 home slate on Wednesday, welcoming the Hornets of Shenandoah University.

The Royals played a very solid first half of basketball and kept the game tight on the scoreboard, but, ultimately, it was Shenandoah that picked up the 72-55 win.

Highlights

First Quarter

In the first quarter it was Mya Hamlet who led the offensive charge for the Royals as she scored 9 points with aggressive drives to the basket and forcing her way to the free throw line. But in that first quarter, the Hornets shot over 80% from the field and took a 27-15 lead after one.

Second Quarter

A more balanced offensive effort and stifling defense from the Royals proved to be a difference maker in the second. The Hornets were held to just eight points on 25% shooting while six different Royals scored, including five from Trinity Washington. EMU outscored SU 19-8 and found itself down only one, 35-34, at the half.

Third Quarter

A pair of Hamlet free throws gave EMU its first lead of the game to start the third quarter before Shenandoah scored seven straight to retake the lead. The Royals defense continued to play tough, holding the Hornets to 27% from the field. But the Royals were only able to pick up six points as SU took a 51-40 lead entering the fourth. 

Fourth Quarter

EMU was able to pull within nine with just under eight minutes left in the quarter, after a Brii Redfearn layup, but Shenandoah answered with another 7-0 run to push their lead back to double digits. Redfearn drilled a pair of threes late in the quarter, but it wasn't enough as the Hornets secured the win.

Hamlet – 16 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists

Redfearn – 12 points, 8 rebounds, 3 steals

Washington – 10 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist

What's Next

EMU's final regular season game will be an away matchup against the Wildcats of Randolph College. This game will be held on Saturday, February 18th at 2pm.
