Longacre's Golden Goal Earns Royals Win over Ferrum

HARRISONBURG, Va. – In a battle of two teams both searching for their first ODAC win, EMU welcomed Ferrum to Harrisonburg on Wednesday.

60 minutes wasn't enough as the Royals and Panthers battled to overtime. But just three minutes into the extra period, Elizabeth Longacre's goal sent the home crowd home happy as EMU picked up the 1-0 win.

Records: EMU 4-13, 1-7 ODAC | Ferrum 2-14, 0-8 ODAC

Highlights
  • Both teams picked up shots on goal in the first quarter, but to no avail. Off a pass from Kate Landis, Zofeya Maldonado tried to stuff a shot past the Panther keeper, but it was saved. On the Royals defensive end, Gracyn Arruda snagged a save, followed up by a defensive save from Libbie Derstine, to keep the game scoreless after one.
  • Neither team was able to get anything on cage in the second quarter, as the Panthers picked up two shots, but both were wide. The game went to the half knotted at zero.
  • The Royals defense held Ferrum without a shot in the third quarter. EMU had a chance late in the period after a foul in the box gave the Royals a penalty corner. Hayley Collins had a shot on goal that was saved followed by a shot from Morgan Leslie that hit the post. The game went to the fourth still scoreless.
  • Once again EMU played lock down defense in the fourth quarter, holding Ferrum to no chances in the final 15 minutes. The Royals offense was able to pick up a pair of shots on cage, one by Leslie and one by Longacre, but both were saved as the game went to overtime.
  • It didn't take long for EMU to strike in the extra frame. After Longacre inserted on a penalty corner, Cassidy Armstrong sent a pass toward the goal, finding Longacre's stick, who poked it past the keeper for the game-winner.
