Royals Pick up Thrilling OT Road Win

Box Score

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Royals needed five extra minutes, but they got the job done.

Mya Hamlet's layup with just 25 seconds left in OT sent EMU to a 60-58 overtime win over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday.

Records: EMU 8-12, 3-10 ODAC | Virginia Wesleyan 6-13, 2-10 ODAC

Highlights

First Quarter

Laila Glymph and Mya Hamlet scored EMU's first six points, giving the Royals a 6-5 lead less than four minutes into the first quarter. The Marlins were able to take a six-point lead late in the quarter, but EMU went on a 6-0 run to tie things before VWU basket gave them a two-point lead after one.

Second Quarter

With Virginia Wesleyan leading 23-21, Lauryn Moore hit a layup and a three to put EMU back on top by three, 26-23. The teams traded points for the rest of the quarter and went to the half tied at 32 in a very evenly-matched first half.

Third Quarter

EMU came out shooting in the third and took an early lead on a three by Trinity Washington and continued to hold the lead over the final minutes of the third, taking a 44-43 lead to the fourth quarter.

Fourth Quarter

A Hamlet jumper pushed the lead to three to start the fourth but Virginia Wesleyan would take a lead, 47-46, at the 7:01 mark. VWU would lead 50-48 before EMU pulled ahead by two with buckets by Glymph and Moore, and it looked like EMU was on their way to a win. But with two seconds left in regulation, the Marlins were able to tie things with a layup and force extra time.

Overtime

Virginia Wesleyan started the overtime period on a 4-0 run but Washington answered with a three, pulling the Royals back to within one. A pair of Marlin free throws pushed their lead back to three but four straight from Hamlet, along with a Washington free throw, sealed the win for the Royals.
