Box Score HARRISONBURG, Va. - Yoder Arena was filled with the fans of the Royals of EMU and the Eagles of crosstown rival Bridgewater College on Wednesday night for the annual Play 4 Kay game.
The two teams did not disappoint the crowd, taking the game into triple overtime to decide the outcome. When the dust settled, the Eagles came out on top by a small margin of 76 to 73.
Highlights
- EMU hopped on the board first courtesy of a Trinity Price free throw. After a quick 5-0 run from the Eagles, Price dropped a jumpshot in the basket within the arc to cut into the early lead, 5-3.
- Brii Redfearn pushed the score to 8-6 in favor of the Eagles with a jumpshot of her own, trying to catch a bit of momentum for the Royals to jump on early in the contest.
- Down 14-11, Price again found herself with an open look, driving to the basket to sink the contested layup to put the Royals within one. Constance Komara, starting her strong offensive night, sank a three from the corner to give EMU the lead in the second period of play. Price sank another two-pointer to push the lead out to 18-14.
- After the Eagles sank a three of their own, Mya Hamlet exploded for a quick scoring burst. Grabbing her own offensive board and setting up the play, she found herself in position underneath the basket where Claiborne Poston found her for the easy two. Shortly after, the first-year found an open look within the arc and sank the easy jumper to keep the momentum on the Royals side.
- With Bridgewater within two, the Royals began another quick burst of offense. Laila Glymph found Komara for another three to give the Royals a small amount of space late in the second period. With time ticking down and the score tied up, Redfearn sank a short jumper to give the Royals a 29-27 advantage, one they would carry into the half.
- After trading shots for the first five minutes of the third period, EMU found an opportunity to take the lead back on account of a deep three from Poston. With minutes to go in the third period, the Royals were looking at a slim 37-36 advantage.
- The two teams took the contest into the fourth period all tied up at 42 apiece. With both teams playing hard defense, it came down to the smallest details and little blows sprinkled throughout. With five minutes to go in the game, the Eagles held a small lead at 49-48.
- Just under three minutes to go, and the Royals staring at a one point deficit, they leaned on the leadership of Komara, who grabbed the defensive board and set up the play. Hamlet found Komara again with the open look, who sank the contested jumper and took the late 54-53 lead.
- In the waning minutes, the two teams kept trading blows, trying to get that decisive bucket. With the game tied up and one more possesion, Hamlet shot the contested shot, but narrowly missed and sent the game into overtime.
- After a quick bucket from the Eagles in the first overtime to take a two-point lead, Poston took advantage of the open look given to her by Hamlet and quickly snatched the lead beack from Bridgewater at 59-58.
- Down the stretch of the first overtime, both teams put up impressive defensive performances to keep the score knotted up at 60-60 and sending the game into its second overtime.
- Both teams struggled to get the ball in the basket in the second overtime, but the Royals capitalized in the key moments. Down 64-62, Hamlet made her way around the Eagles' defenders and sank the tough jumpshot to even up the tally at 64 apiece. The score remained as such, sending the contest into a third overtime.
- Bridgewater quickly went up by four in the third overtime, but Redfearn showed her strong ability to make clutch shots, sinking a three to put the Royals back within one, 68-67.
- Down by three, Poston sank a contested jumper within the arc. After a free throw from Redfearn, the score was at 70-70 with under a minute to go on the clock.
- After Bridgewater went up by four, Poston sank a key three to give the Royals life late in the game. The Eagles were able to put the game at 76-73 from the free throw line and EMU was not able to get off a clean shot in the final seconds, falling by its final score of 76-73 after the toughest of battles.

- 4 - The Royals had four players in double digit points in the game: Redfearn with 19, Komara with 18, Poston with 14, and Price with 12.
- Redfearn - The first-year continued her stellar first-year season in the game. After scoring 19 and grabbing 22 boards, the Fairfax native notched her seventh double-double of the season. The rebound total is a new career-high, as she continues to try to break the single-game record of 24. The total of 15 defensive rebounds does tie a single-game record on the defensive statistic.
What's Next
The Royals turn around quickly, playing again in Yoder Arena on Friday night in a postponed contest from earlier in the season against Hollins. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 PM as the Royals look to pick up a much-needed ODAC win.
