Royals Drop Tough Battle At Roanoke

Box Score

SALEM, Va. - A game, at any level, can be decided at any point during its runtime.

For the Royals, in a game that showed a great amount of positives, the deciding minutes happened down the final stretch, where Roanoke took advantage of a late run to defeat EMU by its final tally of 62-52.

Highlights

  • The Maroons hopped on the board first in the contest, sinking a three to go up 3-0, moving into a drought of scoring through the first few minutes. Mya Hamlet kicked the scoring off for the Royals, sinking a layup after grabbing the contested offensive board with just under eight minutes to play in the first period.
  • Down 11-4 after a short run from Roanoke, Brii Redfearn sank back-to-back jumpshots within the arc to put the Royals within striking distance. After Hamlet found Trinity Price underneath for the easy basket, EMU was down just 13-10 with under two minutes to play in the first period.
  • Starting the second period down 15-12, Claiborne Poston found Constance Komara with an open look outside of the arc, sinking the shot to tie up the game early into the period.
  • After a few quick scores from the Maroons, Hamlet again drove to the basket to put the Royals within two. Komara, showing off her sharp shooting capabilities, sank another key three-pointer, giving the Royals their first lead of the game.
  • Jumpshots from Hamlet and Laila Glymph gave space for EMU, giving the team a 26-21 lead with just under five minutes to play in the half.
  • Strong three-point shooting down the stretch kept the momentum on EMU's side. With time ticking down in the half, Poston sank a deep three to send the Royals into the half with a 37-30 lead. The Royals outscored the Maroons 25-15 in the second period.
  • The Royals started the scoring in the third period. After Komara came down with the tough defensive board, Hamlet found herself with the ball, dishing it to an open Price inside of the arc who quickly sank the jumpshot to push the Royals' lead to nine.
  • At the 4:20 mark, Poston sank a deep three to give the Royals a double-digit lead at 44-34, keeping the momentum on EMU's side.
  • With just over a minute to play left in the third period, Price continued her strong outing, sinking a contested jumpshot inside of the arc to keep the momentum on EMU's side. Heading into the fourth period, the Royals were ahead 50-45.
  • The Royals struggled down the stretch of the fourth period and Roanoke took advantage, overtaking the game and finishing it off with the win by its final score of 62-52.
