HARRISONBURG, Va. – The EMU women's basketball team returned home after a weekend in Roanoke, welcoming in the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan.

The Royals defense held Virginia Wesleyan to just 32% from the field while picking up double-doubles from Brii Redfearn and Mya Hamlet en route to a 55-47 win.

Highlights

First Quarter

It took more than three minutes for either team to get on the board, but after the Marlins took a 3-0 lead, back-to-back buckets from Hamlet gave EMU a 4-3 lead. The teams traded points to VWU leading 10-7 before Redfearn's layup cut the Royals deficit to 10-9 after one.

Second Quarter

The Royals opened the second frame on a 5-0 run with a three from Trinity Washington and a Hamlet layup. Once again, the teams traded points to 18-all, which was the score heading into the half.

Third Quarter

Another 5-0 EMU run highlighted the start of the third quarter as they took a 23-18 lead. The Marlins responded and pulled ahead by one and the teams continued to stay even until late in the third quarter. At 2:41, with the game tied at 28, Redfearn drilled a three, Laila Glymph and Moore both hit shots and EMU pulled ahead by seven. The Royals kept a six point lead heading to the final frame.

Fourth Quarter

EMU started the fourth on a 9-4 run and extended their lead to 11, 46-35, with a Trinity Washington layup. They were able to push their lead to 12 but the Marlins kept fighting, pulling within seven with less than two minutes left. EMU was able to play good defense, holding VWU to just two points in the final two minutes to secure the win.

What's Next

The Royals will be back at Yoder Arena on Saturday as they welcome the WildCats of Randolph College. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 pm.
