Royals Women's Volleyball Stays Undefeated in ODAC Play

Box Score

ROANOKE, Va. - 2001 was a pretty good year.

The iPod was introduced, the Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA championship and Lifehouse's "Hangin by a Moment" was the top song of the year. Also, 2001 was the last time the EMU women's volleyball team started 4-0 in the ODAC. Well now they can add 2021 to that list.

EMU moved to 6-5, 4-0 ODAC with a 3-0 road win over Hollins on Wednesday night.

Highlights

  • The first set was tightly contested, with EMU holding a small lead throughout until Hollins was able to tie things at eight apiece. After the two teams traded points, and will the Royals ahead 11-10, EMU went on an 8-1 run, highlighted by kills from Andrea Troyer, Paris Hutchinson and a Troyer/Hutchinson block, coupled with a few Hollins errors, to take a 19-11 lead. HU went on their own run to pull within two, at 17-19, but kills from Hutchinson, Heather Phelps, Sarah East and a pair of Hutchinson aces gave EMU a 25-19 set win.
  • Set two was pretty much a carbon copy of the first, with the beginning of the frame close. But, once again, as EMU held a tight 14-13 lead, three Hutchinson aces and a Phelps kill gave the Royals some breathing room and a 20-13 lead. Hollins would add three more points but back-to-back kills from Hutchinson gave EMU a 25-16 win in set two.
  • EMU dominated the final frame from start to finish. They jumped out to a 7-3 lead and never looked back. Hollins was able to pull within one, at 6-7, but would never get closer as EMU had a 5-0 and a 6-0 run to take control. Hollins scored three straight with match point on the line but a service error gave the Royals the 25-15 set win and the 3-0 match victory.
  • Hutchinson led all players with 15 kills to go along with five aces. Miller had a match-high 23 assists.
  • Defensively, Troyer led the way with five assisted blocks and Phelps added three. Abby Kaufman had nine digs on the night.

By the Numbers

  • 12 - EMU's size was too much for Hollins as the Royals finished with one solo block and 16 blocks assists compared to just one solo and four block assists for HU.
  • 4 - This is the fourth match of the season in which EMU has had at least 10 service aces in a match.
  • 9 - Hutchinson has double-digit kills in nine of the Royals matches this season including all of their wins.

Words from Coach Steinbrecher

"We're excited about the win tonight. Hollins is scrappy and they kept us on our toes. I was impressed with our blocking. Andrea did a great job leading us on that front. Paris stepped up and played her game and we had some strong serving from Paris, Lizzy (Kirkton) and Manuela (Marin)."

What's Next

The Royals will have a little time off before their next match. They'll welcome another ODAC undefeated team, Virginia Wesleyan, to Yoder Arena next Tuesday. Serve is scheduled for 6 pm.
