CNU Too Much for Women's Volleyball

Box Score

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Sometimes you just run into a buzz saw.

For the EMU women's volleyball team, that buzz saw came in the form of the Christopher Newport Captains. The Captains came into Tuesday night's matchup at 10-2 and winners of seven straight. They rode that momentum to a three set win over EMU, 25-18, 25-19 and 25-17.

Highlights

  • The two teams started the match dead even, with neither able to pull ahead by more than a point. With CNU leading 4-3, EMU went on a 3-0 run, highlighted by a Heather Phelps and Sarah East block and kills from Paris Hutchinson and East. CNU then went on runs of 7-1 and 9-6 to take a 20-13 lead. EMU was able to chip away at the lead, rattling off five straight points and forcing a Captain timeout. But with the score 20-18, CNU picked up five straight to take the first set, 25-18.
  • The Captains started hot in the second set, pulling ahead 11-5 and forcing EMU to take a timeout to regroup. The Royals were able to get as close as four, at 14-18, but CNU finished the set on a 7-5 tilt and took a 2-0 lead.
  • Despite being down 0-2, EMU fought hard in the final frame. With the Captains leading 11-7, EMU took advantage of two CNU errors and had a block from Hutchinson and Andrea Troyer to pull within two. But CNU outscored EMU 9-2 in the next 11 points and ultimately taking the third set, 25-17.
  • Hutchinson led the way with nine kills while East had eight. Megan Miller added 24 assists. Troyer finished with five blocks.
