Women Force Turnovers But Fall, 59-50

Box Score

The Royals forced a season high 17 turnovers on Saturday against visiting Randolph College, but it was a pair of quick runs which made the difference in a 59-50 loss.

EMU's young women head into the postseason at 0-4, but playing their best basketball of the season. The ODAC Tournament bracket will be announced Monday at 5:00pm, with First Round games set for next Thursday.

Claiborne Poston (Midlothian, Va./Millwood) gave EMU the first lead against Randolph with an offensive putback on the opening possession. Neither team led by more than four in the first quarter and the score was knotted at 12-12 after 10 minutes.

The second looked to be just as tight until the WildCats struck a quick 8-0 run over the span of just 1:24, opening a 26-16 margin. The Royals responded with the next five points, but still trailed by five at halftime, 28-23.

EMU came out of the break with a ton of energy and firing from the outside. Back-to-back triples from senior Emily McCombs (Culpeper, Va./Eastern View) gave the women their first lead since the first, and another long ball made it 32-29. But Randolph caught some breaks and got the lead back with a 7-0 spurt. Poston was fouled on a three-point attempt at the end of the third and the point guard drained two of the three attempts to get EMU within 44-40 at the final break.

But that momentum wouldn't carry, as the Royals scored just three points over the opening 6:45 of the fourth. By then, the WildCats had pushed out to a 58-43 lead. The women made one final surge, with Poston's triple capping a 7-0 run to trim the margin to 58-50 with 2:15 to go. But the lid on both baskets went closed over the final two minutes, as Randolph scored the only point during that final stretch with a free throw.

Eastern Mennonite forced Randolph into 26 turnovers on the day, including picking out a season high 17 steals. The Royals notched 15 or more steals in three of their four games during the regular season, averaging 13.0 per game, second best in the ODAC.

McCombs picked out a career high five of those steals, to go with a season best 14 points.

Poston also notched a season high with 14 points, to go with highs of four assists and four steals. Fellow guard Tiffany Carey (Bedford, Va./Jefferson Forrest) also had four picks, along with a team high seven rebounds.

Mya Wright (Palmyra, Va./Fluvanna County) had the best scoring game of her first year with 10 points. May Wadman (Purcellville, Va./Homeschool) added six rebounds, including four offensive, along with a pair of steals. Constance Komara (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) scored eight.

Kylie Stark, Randolph's standout freshman, had team highs of 17 points, nine rebounds and six assists, although the Royals hounded her into 12 turnovers.
