Box Score Harrisonburg, Va. - The Royals battled again on Saturday, taking on undefeated Roanoke College in a weekend, conference matchup. Despite a strong offensive effort, EMU came up just a bit short against the heavy-hitting Maroons, but continued to show promise in the 70-56 loss in Yoder Arena.
Highlights
- It took some time for both teams to get going offensively, but the Royals got on the board first when first-year Brii Redfearn found Mya Hamlet with an open lane. Hamlet drove in and sank the layup, giving EMU the early lead.
- The Maroons went on a 10-0 run until the final minute of the period, where Redfearn ended the run with two sank free throws. She went to the line once more in the final seconds, sinking another to push the score to 12-5 at the end of the first period.
- The maroons struck first in the second period, until Lauryn Moore stepped up for EMU. After grabbing a defensive board, Moore looked for an open shot. Hamlet, containing possession at the time, found Moore with an open look and the first-year took advantage, sinking the shot from outside of the arc to give the Royals some life.
- The two teams went back-and-forth the rest of the half, with Roanoke having the slight advantage. At the end of the half, the Maroons were looking at a comfortable lead of 30-19, but the Royals stayed at their heels.
- Roanoke outscored the Royals 22-17 in the third period, despite strong play from some key Royals' players. Hamlet had five, with Constance Komara and Moore each notching four to keep the Royals with a chance down the stretch.
- The Royals ended up outscoring the Maroons in the fourth period 20-18, but were unable to mount a big enough comeback to trim the lead down. Laila Glymph and Chyna Roberts each had four points off of the bench in the fourth period of play.
- Hamlet and Moore led the scoring for the Royals in the contest, each notching 12, respectively. Komara was right behind them with 10 of her own and Trinity Price had nine.
- Moore led the Royals with seven boards and Hamlet dished out four assists in the game.
