Box Score FREDERICK, Md. - If the Hood women's basketball team has any sort of in with Santa, then Mya Hamlet is getting nothing but coal for Christmas.
The first-year was bad, in a good way, for EMU, leading the way with a career-high 27 points, helping the Royals pick up a 60-49 win over Hood.
Highlights
- Brii Redfearn, who missed last weeks game against Ferrum, got EMU on the board first. She picked up a steal and drove the length of the court for a fast break layup. Hamlet added a bucket to put EMU up 4-0 before Hood was able to tie it with four straight themselves. Redfearn drilled a three to put the Royals back on top. Hamlet, Laila Glymph, Mya Wright and Trinity Price each added two points apiece to finish out the quarter and give EMU a 15-9 lead after one.
- The Royals were able to extend their lead to 20-9, keeping the Blazers off the board for the first four minutes of the second period. Hood finally got on the board at the 5:42 mark and ended up outscoring EMU 13-6 in that time span to trail the Royals 22-26 at the break.
- Hood pulled within two to start the third before Constance Komara hit a pair of freethrows to extend the lead back to four. Hamlet then hit a jumper and Komara added another pair of freethrows to give the Royals a 6-0 run and an eight point lead. The two teams scored six apiece to end the frame and EMU held a 38-30 lead at the end of three.
- Trailing by eight, Hood opened the fourth on a 13-2 run and took their first lead of the game with 5:38 left. After a Hamlet freethrow pulled EMU within two, 41-43, the Blazers scored four straight and led by six. But, after free throws from Komara and Hamlet brought EMU within four, the Royals defense clamped down. Komara came up with a big block and fed Glymph, who laid it in, making the score 45-47. EMU then turned two Hood turnovers into five straight Hamlet points to regain the lead, which they would not relinquish this time. In that span, Hamlet secured the win with 11 points across the final 1:44 and the Royals made all nine shots from the charity stripe to ice the game.
- Hamlet's 27 came on 10-17 shooting. She also finished with five rebounds and four steals to pace the Royals. Redfearn added nine and Price picked up eight for EMU's offense. Komara grabbed 11 rebounds on the day, a season-high for the senior.
By the Numbers
- 39 - EMU forced 39 Hood turnovers on the game. They converted those into 31 points.
- 4:55 - After the Blazers took a 47-41 lead at the 4:55 mark, EMU held them to just two points for the rest of the game.
- 32, 25 and 78.1 - EMU shot a season-high 32 freethrow, made a season-high 25 of them, equaling a second-best 78.1% freethrow pct. for the game.
Words From Head Coach Jenny Posey
Our defense fueled us today. We were able to limit them on that end of the floor until our scoring really took off at the end of the game. It was so special to see (Mya) Hamlet take over in the fourth quarter and the joy her teammates had for her."
What's Next
The Royals will pause for the holidays, getting a much needed break. They'll return to campus after Christmas and resume play on Jan. 4, when they hit the road to take on Notre Dame of Maryland. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
