Royals Sweep Ferrum For Double Digit Wins

Box Score

It started with one of EMU's season high nine blocks and ended with a big kill from Hannah Johnson (Staunton, Va./Wilson Memorial) – the Royals' 10th win of the season.

Tuesday's 3-0 road sweep of ODAC rival Ferrum evened Eastern Mennonite University's record at 10-10, while bumping their conference record to 3-6.

For the EMU volleyball women, it's their third double digit win season in the past four years after a six-year drought. The program hasn't seen more than 11 wins in a single campaign since 2001. The third ODAC win also tied the highest single season mark since 2002.

And it all started in fitting fashion, with Andrea Troyer (Harrisonburg, Va./Broadway) and Amy Goodman (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) teaming up for a block on the first rally of the game. Troyer's defensive net play has been dominant at times in recent weeks, as she finished with five blocks in the sweep of Ferrum, her fifth straight effort of five or more stuffs.

The Royals scored the first five points of the night, and never trailed in the opening set, getting a 25-15 win.

The Panthers scored the first three points in the second set, but EMU answered with the next three before taking over with an 8-1 run. It was another cruise control finish at 25-17.

A 5-0 run early in the third pushed the Royals in front 7-3, but this time Ferrum hung around. The home team eventually used a 5-1 streak to knot the score at 21-21. They had it tied again at 23-23. But Troyer and Meredith Stinnette (Altavista, Va./Altavista) notched with 24th point with a block, and Johnson hammered her 14th kill to finish a 25-23 win.

EMU hit .211 as a team, but Troyer's five blocks helped limit the Panthers to a .035 attack percentage. Kara Durren (Gloucester, Va./Gloucester) tied her career high with four block assists, while Goodman and Sarah East (Washington, Va./Rappahannock County) each got their hands on three.

Goodman put down seven kills, while Johnson's all-around play shone, either leading or co-leading both teams with 14 kills, 18 digs and two service aces. Delanie Miller (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) also had two aces.

Setter Tori Wigley (Elkton, Va./East Rockingham) had 16 assists and Abbi Hawkins (Middlebury, Ind./Bethany Christian) added 12.

The Royals have two huge ODAC matches on the table this weekend, both hosted by Randolph College in Lynchburg. In a conference quad match set-up, the women get the host WildCats Friday at 5:00pm, followed by Guilford College Saturday at 1:30pm.
