EMU Men Handled By Guilford College

Box Score

EMU's basketball men failed to find their rhythm against Guilford College in Yoder Arena on Saturday afternoon. As a result, the Runnin Royals fell to the Quakers in a 74-58 loss, shooting just 7-for-24 from long range. The decision drops the Royals to 5-7 overall and 0-4 in the ODAC.

The Royals scored first on their home court off a three pointer from RaShawn Latimer (Warrenton, Va./Kettle Run), but Guilford (6-7/2-2 ODAC) scored on their next four possessions to go on top 18-5, 8:04 into play.

EMU cut the deficit to eight after back-to-back three pointers from Latimer and Maleke Jones (Charles Town, W.V. / Washington), but the Quakers pushed the margin up to 45-27 at the half.

In the opening 20 minutes, Quakers were allowed 10 offensive boards for 22 total, compared to EMU's four offensive and 11 total.

Things didn't get much better in the second half, as Eastern Mennonite tried to gather some momentum but the Quakers answered with a spurt to keep in control.

Freshman Tim Jones (Forestville, Md. / Central) gave the Royals a little momentum, scoring or assisting on nine of the points in an 11-5 run. However, the Royal's 31-29 second half effort wasn't enough to overcome the early lead taken by the Quakers.

EMU shot 21-52 from the floor for 40.4%, including 29.2% from three point range. Guilford was 30-70 for 42.9%, including 7-20 from outside.

The Royals were also edged in rebounding, 47-27, and allowed GC to 25 second chance points, compared to five of their own.

Latimer led all Royals with 16 points, finishing with four triples. Jones scored 11 points and added 3 steals and a pair of assists.

GC's Alston Thompson ended with 17 points and six rebounds. Marcus Curry finished with 16 points and eight rebounds. Carson Long added a double-double on the day with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The road doesn't get any easiter for Eastern Mennonite, as the men play at Washington and Lee Wednesday night in Lexington. The Generals are 8-4 overall and currently third in the ODAC with a 3-0 record. Start time of the game is slated for 7:00pm.
