Box Score The final 2-0 score of the Eastern Mennonite University women's soccer game tilted towards nationally ranked Lynchburg College's favor on Wednesday evening. The matchup had both teams looking for their first ODAC win on the season.
With the loss, EMU falls to 2-5-2 on the season, as LC stands at 23rd in the nation with a 7-1 overall record.
The Royals fell behind early, as the Hornet's struck first just nearly slipping the ball past Wenger. The successful goal was only the second shot taken for the Hornet's in the first ten minutes of the game.
Lynchburg continued to put offensive pressure on EMU, giving the Royals only a few opportunities to break toward's cage in an attempt to get on the board.
LC had a fast break opportunity, resulting in a 1v1 just outside of the box, when a Hornet attacker struck to the lower left corner of the cage forcing a diving save from sophomore goalkeeper Leah Wenger (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite).
Just twenty seconds later, Lynchburg picked up another possible strike until senior midfielder Hannah Walker (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) blocked the shot in front of the goal to clear the ball up the field for the Royals.
The Hornets continued to pick up momentum and put together some dangerous runs.
A couple quick strikes from LC led to chaos in front of the net, which had Wenger diving multiple times. Despite two quick saves, Wenger was unable to stop the third ball, giving Lynchburg a 2-0 edge.
The Royals went into halftime trailing in shots 15-1 and shut out in corner kicks 7-0.
The best scoring chances for the Royals came in the first ten minutes of the second half. Each opportunity resulted in a potential 1v1 between a Hornet defender and freshman midfielder Rachel Sauder (Lyndhurst, Va./Stuarts Draft).
Nearing the end of the game LC had three consecutive corner opportunities, and despite the attacking proximity to the cage, the Royals defense held them out.
The Royals displayed a relentless effort on the defensive end, as Wenger completed the match with a game-high 13 saves.
EMU is back in ODAC conference action on Saturday, Sept. 30th as they host Sweet Briar College on the EMU Turf Field at 1:00pm.
