Box Score EMU drew a tall straw in their ODAC opener Tuesday night, playing a road match at powerful Washington and Lee. The Generals were as commanding as advertised, sweeping to a 3-0 decision in women's volleyball action.
After a tough stretch in the schedule, the Royals slide to 2-8 overall and 0-1 in the ODAC. They will get a chance to rebound Friday night at Hollins University, drawing a 7:00pm start. After an overnight stay in the Star City of the South, Eastern Mennonite will play a Saturday afternoon match at Roanoke College.
W&L scored the first four points of the night against the Royals and rarely slowed down. The women used a 4-0 run midway through the set to get within 17-13 before the Generals closed the door at 25-16.
Set two was a mirror image of the first with Washington and Lee making a final surge to win, 25-16. An 8-1 start for the home team spelled a quick end to the third, finishing at 25-11.
Janna Williams (Kenbridge, Va./Kenston Forest) worked her way to six kills. Jasmine Johnson (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) set up eight assists.
Defensively, Skyler Johnson (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) led the way with nine digs while Jasmine Johnson added seven. Maria Yoder (Manheim, Pa./Hempfield) put down three blocks.
Med Guignon led Washington and Lee with 12 kills, nine digs and two blocks.
