Women's Soccer Celebrates Senior Night With A Win

Box Score

The Eastern Mennonite University women's soccer team recorded its fourth shutout of the season and improve to 4-7-2 on the season after Saturday evening's 2-0 win over Emory & Henry College to open EMU's Centennial Homecoming Weekend.

Despite keeping the pressure on the Wasps (4-8-1) throughout the first half, the Royals broke the scoreless tie in the 11th minute.

After a few chaotic shots in front of the cage, freshman Leigh Lumsden (Madison, Va./Madison County) sent a ball rebounded ball to Liz Huffman (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg Area) who was able to capitalize on catching E&H goalkeeper off guard. The goal was Huffman's third of the season.

The Royals outshot the Wasps 11-1 in the first half. Emory & Henry's goalkeeper had 7 saves, while sophomore Leah Wenger (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) did not see a shot on goal by the Wasps in the first 45 minutes.

The pressure remained on E&H after halftime as EMU dominated the ball; however, the score remained deadlocked for most of the second half.

In the 74th minute, the Royals extended their lead to 2-0 as E&H defender tripped up Laura Rittenhouse (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) just inside the box. Rittenhouse took a penalty shot, sending the ball to the lower left corner of the goal for her third goal of the season.
