Box Score EMU's volleyball women were hoping to scratch out a victory against one of the ODAC's top teams on the road Tuesday evening. After pushing host Lynchburg in the first two sets, the Royals faltered and came home with a 3-0 loss.
The women fall to 9-10 overall and 2-4 in the ODAC, while LC improves to 11-4 and 4-1. Eastern Mennonite steps out of conference play this weekend, heading to Ferrum for a Saturday tri-match against the Panthers and N.C. Wesleyan.
Against Lynchburg, the Royals seemed ready to go from the first touch. A block by Becca Hardy (Port Republic, Va./Eastern Mennonite) and Jasmine Johnson (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) capped a 5-1 spurt which gave the women a 17-15 lead. LC scored four in row to go back in front, but a kill from Meredith Stinnette (Lynch Station, Va./Altavista) and a service ace from Skyler Johnson (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) tied the score at 19-19. The Hornets had a quick sting for an answer, however, closing on a 6-1 tear to win 25-20.
Each team had runs late in the second, with Skyler Johnson landing another ace to finish a 4-1 streak, bumping EMU ahead 22-21. LC scored the next three to regain control and split points to escape, 25-23.
The finish seemed to take the wind out of the Royals' sails, as they fell behind 11-2 in the third. They would get as close as four points before Lynchburg closed the night, 25-16.
Janna Williams (Kenbridge, Va./Kenston Forest) had a team high eight kills. Hardy added six kills and four blocks. Beck Hoskins (Danville, Va./Westover Christian Academy) added three blocks. Jasmine Johnson put up 21 assists.
