Box Score Despite being hounded all game by visiting Virginia Wesleyan, the Royals held firm on the defensive side. In the end, a pair of breakdowns cost EMU's soccer women in a 2-0 loss Wednesday night at home.
The Marlins attempted nine shots in the first before finally breaking through in the 39th minute. Keeper Becca Borg (Gig Harbor, Wash./Peninsula) made an impressive save on a VWC shot, but the rebound landed right in front of Brittany Wentzel who had an easy tap in for the goal.
Madison Atkins added some breathing room for the visitors, making it 2-0 with a score in the 72nd minute.
Borg finished with 13 saves in the loss, her third straight double digit effort.
"Rachel Sturm (Denton, Md./North Caroline) really played well in the defense," added Coach Ted Erickson. "Amanda Williams (Millsboro, De./Delmarva Christian) also did a good job up top, holding up the ball and allowing her teammates to get up in the attack."
The Royals (1-8 / 0-2 ODAC) have a big game at Guilford this Saturday at 5:00pm. EMU and the Quakers are both expected to be fighting for a spot in the ODAC Tournament.
