Box Score Despite ending a scoreless streak, the field hockey women lost an ODAC battle at home Tuesday night, falling 4-1 to Roanoke College. The Royals stopped a three-game scoring drought with their second-half goal, and will look to take the momentum from their improved play into this Saturday's home date with Bethany.
The early goings of the game were back-and-forth, as each team earned corners and took shots over the opening 10 minutes. But the Maroons hit the cage first on a rebounded shot in the 15th minute.
EMU kept things tight until a stretch late in the half where Roanoke scored twice to balloon up a 3-0 cushion.
The Royals set out to win the second half, and the women responded to the challenge. After a corner in the 55th minute, Emily Augsburger (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) attempted a shot which was blocked. Melissa Cox (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield), who had originally inserted the corner, found the rebound on the right side of the cage and flipped the ball in for her third goal of the season.
Roanoke squelched the notion of a comeback, however, scoring in the 66th minute to rebuild the three-goal margin.
The women were out-shot 22-9, but put five of their attempts on target. Kelsey Troyer (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) made eight saves.
Eastern Mennonite is now 2-10 overall and 0-3 in the ODAC. The non-conference game with Bethany starts at 3:00pm on Saturday.
Coach E.A. Jackson said her women have continued to improve this season:
