Hornets Prove They Can Sting EMU Twice In One Week

Box Score

After dropping their season finale on Wednesday because of a late rally, EMU's field hockey women hoped to turn the tables in a rematch in the ODAC Quarterfinals.  But it was a different story altogether on Saturday, as host Shenandoah scored first and then held off the Royals to end their year, 3-1.

Senior Jenessa Derstine (Harleysville, Pa./Christopher Dock) nearly helped Eastern Mennonite to the same early start they had in the regular season meeting.  In that game, she scored in the 22nd minute to put the women in front.  In the tourney game, Derstine clanged one off the post in the seventh minute, leaving things scoreless.

The women fired a few more shots over the next five minutes but nothing went in.  The Hornets finally held their No. 3 seeding with goals in the 22nd and 34th minute, taking a 2-0 edge into halftime.

SU surged again early in the second, and made it 3-0 with a score in the 46th.

EMU stepped up their attack, but had shot by Emily Augsburger (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) saved by a defender, and then a penalty stroke from Melissa Cox (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) stopped in the 56th.  Lorraine Armstrong (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) finally broke through in the 63rd minute to make it 3-1, but it was too late for the women.

The Royals were out-shot 27-16, including 11-8 on goal.  Armstrong, Derstine, Cox and Augsburger each had two shots on target.  Ariel Bills (Paradise, Pa./Pequea Valley) made eight saves in between the pipes.

The loss leaves Eastern Mennonite with a 4-15 record to end the year.
