Box Score Some things are just not meant to be, and it was one of those days for the EMU soccer women on Saturday. Playing an ODAC Quarterfinal game at top-seeded Lynchburg, who also happened to be the No. 2 team in the country, was too much for the Royals to handle, and they were shut down 11-0.
When the two teams met in the regular season, the Royals thwarted the powerful Hornets for much of the first half. They trailed only 1-0 at halftime of that game before LC pulled away in the second.
This time Lynchburg made sure EMU would not hang around. The Hornets stung quickly and jumped to a 6-0 lead in the first half. They added five more in the second for the final margin.
The Royals faced 27 shots on goal. Junior Becca Borg (Gig Harbor, Wash./Peninsula), who recently returned from a foot injury to play in just her second game since Sept. 20, made 16 saves. The effort tied the season high for an EMU keeper.
Despite losing their last five games as injuries depleted their roster, the women close 2014 with a record of 6-12-1. They also made their second straight trip to the ODAC Tournament after missing the postseason the previous two years.
