Royals Succumb To Late Goal On The Road

Box Score

The EMU field hockey women suffered a tough loss at Roanoke Wednesday afternoon, dropping a 2-1 ODAC decision to the Maroons.  Roanoke scored the game-winner with less than eight minutes to play, dropping the Royals to 1-2 in the conference, into a three-way tie for sixth place in the standings.

Eastern Mennonite controlled the opening minutes but couldn't score despite firing three shots in the span of 1:15.  The Maroons hit the scoreboard first on a putback after goalie Hannah Daley (Lothian, Md./Southern) made back-to-back saves.

The women regrouped and surged just before halftime, scoring less than two minutes before the break.  Camille Williams (Media, Pa./Delaware County Christian) assisted Jenessa Derstine (Harleysville, Pa./Christopher Dock) for the equalizer in the 34th minute.

The momentum carried early into the second, but a pair of shots from Derstine were kept out leaving the game tied at 1-1.  Finally with 7:18 to play, Roanoke scored again after a saved shot, getting the eventual game-winner.

EMU had a 13-8 advantage in shots, although shots on goal were even at 7-7.  Derstine had a game high five shot attempts while Lorraine Armstrong (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) fired three.  Daley finished with five saves.

Now 2-10 overall, the Royals will look to snap a three-game losing skid on Saturday when they host Virginia Wesleyan as part of EMU Homecoming.  With a 4:00pm start time, the women have their Parent and Senior Recognition slated beforehand.
