Box Score For two sets, the EMU volleyball women played right with fourth-place Lynchburg. Unfortunately they were stung late in each set, and ran out of steam in a 3-0 ODAC loss the Hornets in Harrisonburg.
Neither team led by more than two points in a tight first set, and the Royals held a slight 19-18 edge late. But Lynchburg scored the final seven points to grab a 25-19 opener.
Set two was nearly identical to the first. EMU used a 4-0 run to jump in front 17-15, only to watch the Hornets surge back in front 21-18. The women scored three straight to lock the score up at 21-21, but LC scored the final four to win 25-21.
The Royals were close early in the third set, but that would be it. Lynchburg took over with a 9-0 run and clinched the match, 25-15.
Freshman Alexa Weeks (Montross, Va./Washington & Lee) had her best collegiate effort, hammering nine kills on just 17 attempts with a .417 attack percentage. Kayla Smeltzer (Richmond, Va./Maggie L. Walker) and Janna Williams (Kenbridge, Va./Kenston Forest) each added five kills. Jasmine Johnson (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) lofted 20 assists.
Johnson and Dani Driver (Cheverly, Md./Elizabeth Seton) each had two service aces. Katie Miller (San Antonio, Tex./Brandeis) was her usual self, leading the back row with 15 digs. Skyler Johnson (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) was good for 10 digs.
The women will get a chance to collect themselves after a 0-6 start to the ODAC season. Saturday's Homecoming match is a non-conference date with Notre Dame of Maryland, starting at 2:00pm in Yoder Arena.
